MightyJordan
Oh god no. Last week, it was Venezuela, this week, it's Switzerland. :pinch: Switzerland has passed a law that will ultimately lead to the complete ban of any violent video games in the country. German trade publication GamesMarkt reports that the full implications of bill will not be known until the Government reveals its exact requirements - a decision that has not yet been made. What is certain though is that the Swiss authorities have now obtained the power to introduce any measures they see fit. According to MCV: 'The likeliest outcome seems to be an outright ban on the production, distribution and sale of any games deemed to be unsuitable - most likely anything with either a PEGI 16+ or PEGI 18+ certificate.' The original motion called for the ban on any title that "requires cruel acts of violence against humans and human-like creatures for in-game success". We're not sure if we're human or human-like creatures. But we are certain that we don't approve. Let's try to refrain from flaming this time, please. You obviously know my view on this, so I'll say no more and just let everyone post their thoughts.
c3ntury
Meh, it was only a matter of time before another stuck-up policition decided that video-games are causing crime, even without any evidence.
itzwolf
I think this is really the wrong way to go about everything... Parents should not let the children play the games until they are mature enough to understand its simply a video game. I understand there is influence with them but it's like banning sharp objects because they can be used as weapons. What will society end up as, plastic utensils, fines for swearing, padded rooms, government approval to go outside? bleh!

Growled Member Posted March 20, 2010 Member Share Posted March 20, 2010 I think it should be a parent's decision and not the state's decision.
qdave
I think it's a good thing...kids ( <12 ) should not play games like GTA, or saint's row or whatever else. One thing to consider is that it might increase piracy, since people wont be able to buy them, they will have to d/l them.
soniqstylz
I think it's a good thing...kids ( <12 ) should not play games like GTA, or saint's row or whatever else. But adults should have the option.

It probably will but I doubt you hear anyone blame this bill.

WastedJoker
Yet another government trying to tackle the issue of violence by taking the easy option. government will never tackle the real cause of violent youths - bad parenting.
DrewJW
But people will STILL import them, and STILL play them. I cannot think of a single ban which has not been circumvented by determined people.
Pablo2008jedi
And they say that the UK is a nanny state  If they really want to do something then charge the parents for letting their child play these games. Its the parents to blame, not the shops, gov or whatever. I was in a gamestation store the other week and a whole family was there. The kid, (I'd say about 12-14yr) wanted a 18 cert game, so the parent had to "buy" it, even the shop assistant said it wasn't suitable for minors. The father just shrugs his shoulders and handed handed the game to his son. I'm sure if the father handed the son some pornographic material he would be charged. The same should go for video games that aren't suitable for minors. Ok, thats my views over with. iamwhoiam 1 Share
Dance.
But people will STILL import them, and STILL play them. I cannot think of a single ban which has not been circumvented by determined people. That's a small percentage of the population.
neoadorable
grab a pitchfork everyone, they're using steam boilers instead of man labor at the local foundry! time to ban Switzerland i suppose. All that German money they're sitting on from the Eagle's Nest seems to have gone to their poor heads.
XerXis
depends, let's say the state of games continues evolving (as it surely will) and we enter the realm of virtual reality almost or not distinguisable from the real world. With that premiss in mind now imagine some ****ed up game company making a game where you have to torture people. Just that, no other goal, just torture people. Or a realistic rapegame. Should that be allowed, would anyone sane want to play something like that? I don't know to be honest.
neoadorable
you're talking about entertainment that's basically on a par with the imagination in your head, i.e normal fantasies you and i have right now. should we regulate that? many have been clamoring to do so, don't lead them on. the only reason to censor content of any sort is if it directly affects another actual being. what constitutes doing that is the whole cause of the debate.
