game_over
I'm just wondering if there is any difference between the 1TB Apple Time Capsule (on the apple store) and the earlier discontinued 500GB version? I've noticed the 500GB version on eBay is ALOT cheaper than the newer version, am i missing out on any new features by buying this? Also am i understanding right that it can also be used as a wireless router?
Saul Goodman
I think the main difference is below; Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi.For maximum range and compatibility, Time Capsule works simultaneously on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, allowing all the devices on the network to use the most efficient band automatically. It uses the latest 802.11n wireless technology, so you can enjoy up to five times the Wi-Fi performance and up to twice the range of 802.11g wireless networks.4 And improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better performance and up to 25 per cent better range than with the previous-generation Time Capsule. Consider the new version if your using the Time Capsule as a wireless access point and also have different wireless speed devices connecting at the same time (eg: a MacBook and iPhone). There are quite a few Aiport Extremes and Time Capsules on the Apple store that work out maybe ?20-30 more expensive than ebay but obviously give you a 1 year warranty... Just thought you might want to have a look seeing as you are hunting around.
Elliott
I think the main difference is below; I believe every Time Capsule that was made did that, because I remember it being a big deal around the time it was released. I think the reason the eBay ones are cheaper is because they've probably either run out of warranty or are about to.

There have been 3 revision The first version had dual band, but not simultaneous dual band, the second one did simultaneous dual band, and the third upped the capacity to 1tb/2tb from 500gb/1tb. You can get them refurbished direct from Apple for ?142 for the first gen (non-simultaneous) or ?162 for the second gen. Also remember that if you have a Mac with AppleCare, the AirPort Extreme is automatically covered by your AppleCare policy.
