WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 2.5" Internal SATA HD Spindown?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've recently bought a WD Scorpio Blue WD5000BEVT 500GB 2.5" SATA hard drive to put in my PS3. I decided instead to put this in my MacBook Pro and put the 320GB drive from my MBP in the PS3 - which I have done and works perfectly.

Now the problem is the WD HDD in the MBP. I can physically hear the HDD spin down and then almost immediately spin up again. Whilst in this state of "spin down" OSX is a little unresponsive. Does anyone know how to stop the drive from shutting down so often. It literally happens every few seconds. I haven't noticed the problem when booted in Windows 7 though I could be wrong. Any ideas? wacko.gif

Did you clone the drive or just reinstall OS X again? You checked your power settings in the OS for that? Can't think of anything that would make it spin up and down so fast other than that.

Look at the thread right next to yours in this section. It dealt with the same thing and there are a few solutions posted there.

Edit: Wait, sorry, it's doing it every few seconds? The OS shouldn't be telling it to spin down and up that fast. It could be a hardware issue. Have you run all the SMART tests on the drive to see if anything is coming back badly? I'd definitely make sure you have a backup until you figure out what's going on. Maybe it has "advanced" power saving settings with that drive that make it spin down fast being that it's a laptop drive. I'm not familiar with the drive though, so I'm not sure.

I can't find a source for this, so you will have to take my anecdote at face value, but Western Digital drives are known for parking the drive heads and taking a while to spin up. This is apparently the fix to your problem: http://bytecrafter.blogspot.com/2009/11/fixing-hard-disk-clicking-aggressive.html

Thanks for the replies guys. Apparently these WD drives are known to have issues with OSX/Unix-based systems. However, I've applied the mod listed here and the drive is no longer spinning down every few seconds. biggrin.gif
