Everything there is to know about gaming, by Alan Titchmarsh

Recommended Posts

I might have once fancied Julie Peasgood. I can’t remember the exact circumstances; it may have been a cheese-induced dream. Regardless, I didn’t get past 2′23″ in this nonsensical attempt to bring down the gaming industry by three people who don’t know anything about it. One of them is Kelvin MacKenzie. Another is Alan Titchmarsh. That, ladies and gentlemen, tells you all you need to know. Let’s us know how far you get into it before wanting to harm yourself:

I sent this to Julie Peasgood's manager's email:

You ****ing hypocritical *******, a woman who talks about sex toys and the like on a family show such as this then goes on to promote censorship in the face of indisputable evidence from the computer website editor of a classification system that is abused by parents across the country. Is that not the real issue, educating parents to choose what their children are exposed to rather than letting biased narrow minded idiots like this bitch influence public opinion that will no doubt pressure the government into deciding the content of what we can buy. Where's the freedom.

You both disgust me.

Maybe angry emails like that make us look worse but I'm just so disgusted, not just by the people on the show but the blind support the audience shows for them, it just makes you want to rip your ears off as they all support these fools.

2:47 for me... and I stopped that waste of airtime.

What a load of **** that is! Parents, Parents, PARENTS. That is the damn problem not the games. God I get so freaking irritated at this ****. Lets ban games cause they are the problem  Why don't people get it! Teach your child values, pay attention to what they are doing, and don't let an 8 year old play war games rated 17+.

Be involved like a responsible individual and raise your kid the right way and this wont be an issue.

But you can stop them going to a cinema, you cant them playing a game at home.

What?! There isn't even much of a gaming equivalent of a cinema to speak of, and then, THEN. Laws, rules and regulations can control our kids, but we can't in our own homes.

If I was the dude on that program I'da killed her when she said that!

EDIT:

It was Alan that said that, they're as bad as each other.

"The Lone Ranger was never thaaaat bad!"

Does it not worry you that those sort of people are the majority of people?

No, I'm aware they are the majority but I don't let it worry me any more. The majority of people do all sorts of stupid things and I'd be pretty messed up if I let it all get to me. I'm not saying that you're wrong to object if something bothers you and every now and then I tend to fly into a violent rage but at the end of the day there's nothing you can do about it.

Anyway, if you do find a way to make the majority listen, please ask them to stop calling soldiers heroes.

Holy F***! I cannot believe what I have just witnessed :|

It has been a very long time since I last screamed WHAT?!! at my PC monitor. That woman clearly has no idea about anything and why her opinion is at all valued is way beyond my understanding. I feel incredibly sorry for Tim having to defend us gamers in front of this biased moronic crowd who would rather listen to that dumbass woman's one liners then his clear logic. The host himself had clearly made his mind up and the topic was not there to be discussed but to be mocked and I am absolutely disgusted at what I have seen. The real f***ing irony here is that these brainless *******s that continuously preach their un educated nonsense are what is truly doing damage to society because the millions of viewers listen and agree unconditionally. Words cannot describe how bad I felt for Tim trying to argue his point to a bunch of arrogant, obnoxious yuppy twats! If I were in his position I would have completely lost it. / rage mode

agreed, How he kept his cool is beyond me, However if he lost his cool they would of said "See what video games do?"

I hate the relation between shooting someone in MW2 and then doing it in real life. I would NEVER consider doing it. EVER. I played tomb raider when i was younger... I never went and explored caves etc.

As he said. It's about the story. Not the content (In all fairness though, the content does help)

Exactly it makes no funking sense to relate that. See how she pulls a number out of her ass about some study done with 130.000 gamers? and he comes back with the government statistics saying there is no evidence that games = violent behavior and everyone just shrugs him off.. GRRR seriously grinds my gears how this woman is in existence and still fail to see why anyone gives a funk about what she has to say?

I'm a bored housewife mother in my mid 40s, I spend my days locked in the house working and I can relate to this woman, she tells me why everything's going so badly in the world these days.

His argument fell flat on its face as soon as they started talking about certificates, even the guest was dumbfounded by his stupidity at what he said.

Stick to gardening shows Titchmarsh you ****.

The most telling part of this whole mess was the audience. You could see that as a group of concerned citizens/useless parents/daytime tv sheeple that they were hearing what they wanted from that silly bitch. Tim didn't stand a chance trying to promote reason or actual facts. But then, that's what daytime TV is for. It's the bridge between the world of TV for kids and the one for grown-ups.

These people are just so sad.

I wish I had their emails.

This is a psychologically done report that they can dispute all they want, but if you read what it says in the synopsis:

Video game violence has become a highly politicized issue for scientists and the general public. There is continuing concern that playing violent video games may increase the risk of aggression in players. Less often discussed is the possibility that playing violent video games may promote certain positive developments, particularly related to visuospatial cognition. The objective of the current article was to conduct a meta-analytic review of studies that examine the impact of violent video games on both aggressive behavior and visuospatial cognition in order to understand the full impact of such games. Methods A detailed literature search was used to identify peer-reviewed articles addressing violent video game effects. Effect sizes r (a common measure of effect size based on the correlational coefficient) were calculated for all included studies. Effect sizes were adjusted for observed publication bias. Results Results indicated that publication bias was a problem for studies of both aggressive behavior and visuospatial cognition. Once corrected for publication bias, studies of video game violence provided no support for the hypothesis that violent video game playing is associated with higher aggression. However playing violent video games remained related to higher visuospatial cognition (r x = 0.36). Conclusions Results from the current analysis did not support the conclusion that violent video game playing leads to aggressive behavior. However, violent video game playing was associated with higher visuospatial cognition. It may be advisable to reframe the violent video game debate in reference to potential costs and benefits of this medium.

Emphasis mine.
