Sony drops Linux Support

Recommended Posts

It does say revised though, and the OtherOS feature has been revised. So much so that it's been removed. I fully understand why Sony are removing it though and as I've never understood the reason why a home gamer would want this feature I'm totally not bothered at all.

A home gamer may not need it, but the home enthusiast who might want an "all in one" Media device this is very useful. The PS3 playback is limited in certain ways (no NTFS support, can only store video files <4Gb, teribble browser, to name a few), having a Linux OS installed and then dual booting can get round thoese limitations (this is totally an assumption  )

BUt I can see the reason to have, yet it won't affect me at all as I've never used it. But its nice to have a choice ;)

This :)

I don't use it, BUT it's quite a big feature to cut out. What happens 'if' someone finds an exploit via playback of a hacked bluray disc will they remove that feature too to secure the machine?

Seems weird they'd remove functionality, but it also makes sense to keep it inline with the PS3 Slim. Can't say I've ever been interested in installing Linux on my PS3, but I guess the few people that actually did are annoyed by it. If it actually is to prevent exploits and piracy though, I'm all for it.

I hope I get a discount or refund for my PS3. It was sold to me with that feature. I expect that feature to remain. What's next, they come to my door and they take away my Blu-ray drive?realmad.gif

Exactly, as mentioned people would be up in arms if Sony suddenly took away the BC from previous machines. Yes it 'may' be a gateway to exploits, but surely if it does become a simple exploit then they should find a new way to secure it, not remove the feature the machine was sold with.

I guarantee this is an april fool's joke, because FW 3.20 has the 3D upgrade, and that's out in June. We're currently running 3.15.

Wait, just so everyone reads it:

IT'S A FAKE, IT'S AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE

End thread, end convo.

Except that it wasn't announced on April 1st, it was posted March 28th, which means it isn't an April Fools joke. If it IS in fact an April Fools joke, someone at Sony ****ed up big time by announcing this early.

The firmware supposedly comes out April 1st. Roundabout and dumb, yes, but true. Most PS3 FW updates, iirc, come out on Tuesday.

If they are removing a feature that large I hope they are introducing something else instead, like the long awaited XMB Cross Chat? What takes so long anyway?

it'd be hilarious if this was just a lead up to an april fools joke. drop this and cause all the net nerds to lose their minds and then on april 1st go "theres an update but its for X instead. otheros isnt going away. april fools!"

i'd love for it to be that.

even if its not.. oh well. no loss for me. I imagine the corporations using the PS3 as a PC in a server farm won't care because they just won't update... if they ever did anyway.

I don't use that feature so it doesn't affect me and i have a Slim now.

On the Playstation Blog it says "This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update." I guess you can thank geohot (or whatever the name ia) for that.

I cannot find any information as to what else is in this update. So if its not a prank then what is the reason you would update to this?

I'm not a PS3 user, but I've been watching this whole 'removal of Linux support' thing since I read it this morning.

From I read, if you do not install this update, you lose pretty much the gaming part of the PS3. Wont let you play games, movies, connect to PSN, correct me if I am wrong though. ;)

Any game that requires 3.21 won't be able to be played unless you update...so basically any game released AFTER the update. You can't connect to PSN and play online but you can still play any game released prior to the 3.21 update...

Ah, alright. Sorry just your average Xbox 360 user here. :p

Siting security reasons, Sony should be fine legal-wise. I can see people suing but I don't think it will go anywhere.

Removing a listed feature after the sale is a breach of contract, no matter what reason they give for it. Even if you choose not to install the update, you still lose the ability to connect to PSN, among other things (which, again, were listed as features at the time of sale). I highly doubt that even the most liberal of judges would allow a T&C or EULA to cover this kind of conduct without some sort of compensation from Sony to the people who were affected.

Don't Update

A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

their may be hope if you want to keep your linux install....
