DrunknMunky Veteran Posted March 29, 2010 Veteran Share Posted March 29, 2010 March 29th, 2010 @ 16:38 By Johnny Cullen Ninja Theory has claimed it didn?t break even with the PS3-exclusive Heavenly Sword. Speaking with CVG at a hands-on for Enslaved, the developer?s latest project, co-founder Tameem Antoniades said: ?Heavenly Sword came out pretty early on the PS3, and we sold, I think, a million and a half copies, and that?s still not enough as an independent studio to break even.? Antoniades said cash was the reason Ninja Theory went multi-plat for Enslaved. ?It?s just that when so many people have Xbox ? I mean over half the market or more has Xbox 360s ? why limit yourself to one platform?? These comments may just rule out Heavenly Sword 2 being the new ?secret project? on which Ninja Theory has started development. http://www.vg247.com/2010/03/29/ninja-theory-heavenly-sword-sales-still-not-enough-to-break-even/ :/ Probably the one game on the PS3 I've had the most fun from as well, well until GoW3 came out that is! Singh400
I keep hearing "it's awesome" and "it's crap" about this game - WHICH is it?!

Solid Knight
The game didn't seem all that fun.
Draken
Short and sweet, the first PS3 I've owned, so second part on the Xbox? :woot:
NeoTrunks
I thought it was a pretty good game. I guess one thing that may have kept it from selling too well is that it's pretty hard to find, and when you do, it's still full price. I bought it last year for $55 or so. slyph
they have new copies at my local gamestop for $30 finally but damn took them long enough to knock it down. the demo was fun and it is a great game. short like most games like this.
madd-hatter
This is one of those games that in 15 years, due to it's lack of sales and thus non "Greatest Hits" status, will be worth many times it's original price. Buying a bunch of factory sealed copies of Heavenly Sword is far safer than any stock at the moment.
Hedon
I didn't find the game to be very good.

DrunknMunky Veteran Posted March 29, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted March 29, 2010 Well Heavenly Sword started life out as an Xbox game, but seeing as Sony published it I doubt we'll ever see a sequel on the 360. I doubt we'll ever see a sequel at all tbh :( Actually tempted to replay it now lol

Draken
Sony owns the IP. Oh well, they own the IP but not Ninja Theory's talent so I'm sure their next game will be as good or better and multi-platform
+Anarkii Subscriber² Posted March 30, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 30, 2010 It was a great game back when the PS3 came out, short (as in 4 hours and ure done) but it was pretty breathtaking along the way, and the story was quite good. For $10 that its worth in the bargain bins now, i'd recommend it.

Brad.
How much did they spend creating the game?! If they sold all 1.5 million copies at $20 then they would have got $30 million.
ReAnimation
I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword. As some other people commented, it was very enjoyable, but a bit on the short side. If one game deserves a sequel, it would be heavenly sword in my opinion. I'm not sure what the situation is with heavenly sword though, I don't know if Sony hold the I.P. for the game, or whether its still 'belongs' to Ninja Theory. Posted earlier, SCE owns the IP, and I don't think there are plans for a sequel w/o Ninja Theory.

So that 30 mil is heavily divided post release, never mind the actual development costs included.

So that 30 mil is heavily divided post release, never mind the actual development costs included. Which is why he quoted @ $20, instead of $60. But developers get around 10 - 15% of total revenue for a 2nd-party game, so if average $30 ($60 to start, price dropping over time) per sale, thats $45 million, $4.5 - 6 million to Ninja Theory (tho, I'm sure Sony financed a good portion of the game in exchange for the IP, as well as marketing, etc.)
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted April 1, 2010 Author Veteran Share Posted April 1, 2010 Sorry wasn't even paying attention to the game price he used lol. But yeah there is a huge chunk of profits eaten away before NT even got their share.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 9, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 9, 2010 1.5 million sales and they didn't break even? I'd be looking at the Studio's management of expense rather than the games success if that's the case.
