Subscriber² Posted March 30, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted March 30, 2010 Inspired by the 'What Features are you hoping to see in Windows 8?' thread: What do you expect to see in Mac OS X 10.7? I'll start: The system will be entirely 64-bit, even at the cost of dropping compatibility with the first-generation Intel Macs. GUI overhaul. I wouldn't be surprised if the future OS X GUI will look similar to iPhone OS - just look at Quicktime X Player as an indication where OS X is headed. Social networking integration, similar to what Ubuntu will gain for 10.04. Virtualisation built in. Let's hear what other ideas the Mac community on Neowin has for 10.7. Vice
I would like Time Machine to backup to any disk or volume. Without requiring hacks. That is all I really want from the operating system. I care more about my apps doing their thing than I do about the operating system running them. I want the OS to be as light as possible, use very little resources, not even be noticeable while running my software. The OS to me is like a means to an end, it's there just because it has to be. j0nnymoe
I would love to see an update for the older mac mini's that have problems with the aluminum keys during EFi boot up >.< but yeh going back to the point, some like compiz integrated would be nice and the whole social networking built into the os woud be +

I don't think that the entire system will go 64-bit they sacrifice alot of legacy customers by doing that also one of their biggest apps is still in Coca (itunes) even after the huge upgrades it has had it still has not been re-written. Virtualisation built in would be interesting i don't know if this will come or if it will be better than existing soloutions (Parallels, Fusion etc) I would like to see a re-written faster, less intensive, smaller footprint itunes i would love to give it the time of day to manage ALL my media but at the moment it is just soo system intensive. Social networking intergration is not something i want, if it does happen the ability to choose if it intergrates with my system is a must so i can turn it off. A 64-bit kernel can still run 32-bit apps, but I do agree about the legacy customers.
.Neo
For the interface I basically expect a lighter variant of what we have now, similar to iTunes 9 and iPad applications like "iPod". Feature-wise I have no idea...
what
A new interface to match iTunes/iPhoto and Quicktime X. Of course we've been saying that since pre-Leopard, so yeah, not holding my breath. If I'm honest, I don't need my Mac to do anything else for me. I could have quite easily stuck on 10.6.2 until it was time for an upgrade. If there's even so much of a whiff of OS X heading the iPhone OS route though, with a centralised App Store and what have you, I won't be buying another Mac in the future. EDIT: also, no to social networking integration. Facebook is for keeping in touch with friends, not for flooding my entire PC with.

Shadrack
hey, the stopping of developmet of osx and totally switching to ios. A next-gen Macbook Pro w/ a touch screen and iPhone OS running on-top of Mac OS X would be SWEET... but probably a pipe dream at best.. :( But I would personally hate to lose the functionality and power of OS X in favor of iPhone OS. As for what do I want for 10.7 - better multi-touch gesture support that is more configurable. BetterTouchTool does a good job, but these features should be integrated into the OS, IMO. For me, I would like it if OS X was able to incorporate the extra security layer and connection access to "Home Group" for accessing shared files and printers in Windows 7+. I really can't think of anything that good for 10.6->10.7, lol. I don't really have anything to complain about in 10.6. tbh.
PyX
hey, the stopping of developmet of osx and totally switching to ios. Well it COULD be possible, I don't think I'd hate it that much. It'd take a little bit of getting used to it, but not so bad. I remember of an article posted here on Neowin on the front page about that. It's less crazy than we think. People think "hey, you can't just pull out iPhone OS on your iMac". Well, duh. Look at what they did with the iPad, they rewrote pretty much all of the apps. They'd need to do the same to port this OS on the big monitors. Anyways, we're far from there yet. As for OS 10.7 : - Tabbed Finder. - Blu-Ray support (burning, reading, etc. and incorporated in the DVD Player app, which needs to be renamed or incorporated into iTunes) - Resolution independance. My 27-inch monitor is awesome, but things have become too small, and the text sizes were never updated with time. That applies for websites, too. But I think the OS needs to be fixed first. So Resolution Independance + Natively use characters just a LITTLE bigger. - QuickTime acquiring Perian's functionality, out-of-the-box - iTunes rewritten in Cocoa from scratch - A lyrics widget in Dashboard - A Boot Camp with perfect drivers - A new File System, better than HFS+ - Possibility to read and write NTFS natively, without hacks. - Cinch functionality incorporated in OS X - No more of these small, unreadable inspectors. I'm not fond of them. I am for the apps with just one single window (i.e. Safari when tabs are used, iTunes, iCal, ...) - A bigger concern for gamers. If game developers would develop more with the very latest OpenGL, then incorporate it in the OS, and try to approach companies. - A "Games" folder, out-of-the-box. I always need to create one. - HTML5 and CSS3 fully implemented in WebKit (is CSS3 already fully implemented? Probably some tags missing...) - iChat supporting more protocols. MSN, Yahoo, AIM, etc. And please, support sending files fast, custom smileys and custom stuff, and voice and video. There's a lot of work to be done in the instant messaging area in OS X, and Apple has to be their own pioneer about that. - An App Store, but for OS X. No more of these physical packages, they're killing the environment and do we really care THAT much about these? They've become so small and unimportant nowadays, I think we're ready to face this change. - A built-in image editor. Windows has Paint, OS X has nothing right now. It's not like we really need one, in all honesty there are better workarounds on the Mac to Paint (taking screenshots for instance, or commenting pictures, it's much better in OS X). OS9.... happened every couple years... then OS X.. same name for a decade... but I wouldnt' say that the "minor" build upgrades are just service packs... they do add a good number of features (only calling them minor, because the build number is a minor build increase instead of a major build number increase aka 10)

OS X basically just means the Darwin kernel and the generational shift from the "classic" OS (OS 9 and before) to what we know as the Mac OS now. Yep OS 10 with a $129 service pack every year or so. About every year and a half, and no, they're not service packs. Each iteration of OS X brings on big features and improvements. Leopard to Snow Leopard has been the smallest user-noticeable improvement, but then again, it only cost $29 (and is well worth it).

I've seen them with version 8.3000.3 (yeah 3000 minor builds on a version 8 that is 15 yrs old)... if they want to call it OSX then just call it that but dont stay on version 10 forever you can still call it OSX version 11 just make the X mean something besides the number
