Time for an HDD upgrade

Recommended Posts

Isn't there a limit to how big a FAT32 partition can be? I ask because I need to upgrade my hard drive as well but just want to be sure the backup will work...

I think Windows won't create / format a FAT32 partition bigger than 32Gb. Some external hard disk manufacturers have a utililty that will allow you to format the entire external drive as fat32 (I'm sure western Digital has one for download), or if you have access to a Mac, you can format the entire external drive as FAT32 using the disk utility.

I recently bought a 320Gb External drive for backing up my PS3, it came NTFS formatted, I then used my Macbook Pro to format the drive to FAT32 so the whole drive is usable for the PS3.

FAT32 can theoretically do 2TB, not that anyone would use FAT32 for that. I used a 500GB WD My Passport formated using the fat32format.exe utility.

So I'm gonna have to buy another hard drive. Crap.

Since your PS3 is only 40GB... you could probably use a 32GB USB pen for the backup. Check your system information and see how much of your PS3 HDD is ocupied.

Yeah, you need THREE drives:

- Original: the one that came with your PS3...

- New: the one you want to install into the PS3...

- Backup: the one with the backup data from your current PS3...

Also, something that hasn't been said here is that some gamesaves CAN'T be copied or backed-up (only transferred from one PS3 to another PS3, via RJ45)... These gamesaves are copy-protected (dev-team controls this) - games that do this include Killzone2 and Fat Princess...

Finally, don't forget to sync your trophys to the server BEFORE starting the backup... lol

Copy-protected saves are backed up and restored fine. In order for the copy protected files to work they however must be restored to the same PS3. The transfer utility is for when you are switching systems (like a fat for a slim) and want to keep your progress on those games.
