[ Rich ]
This is a post on request from my girlfriend. She has a bit of a problem with her Internet connection. Whenever she browses webpages her connection disconnects. Usually not straightaway, she can usually browse for anytime between minutes, and an hour at times, but always ends up getting disconnected. We have tried using different browsers to her default IE, we have tried Avant, which showed a little improvement, but the problem is still there. And MyIE2, which did seem to help a bit, but again, the probelm was still there. Does anyone have any idea as to why this problem may be occuring? cjbeckwith
You need to discribe what kind of connection you are talking about. Dial--up? Wireless? Ethernet?
Stokkolm
Win95/98/ME: Go into Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on Windows Setup. Uncheck Communications. Restart computer when it is finished. Go back into Add/Remove Programs, click on Windows Setup again. Recheck it. Restart again. Delete the connection and make a new one. All should be fixed. Notice for Win95/98 - Be sure you have win_*.cab files on the hard drive, otherwise have the CD. WinXP: Click on Start and then Run. Type in "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" without the quotes, make sure you aren't connected. Now delete the connection and make a new one. All should be fixed. I work at an ISP and this is what we do, it works. Win2k doesn't really have any problems so I'm assuming that isn't the OS.
Stokkolm
You could try modem strings too, but they are a pain in the ass.
[ Rich ]
It's a dial-up, Freeserve being the ISP if that is at all relevant. VaLUnTriAn, when you say create a new connection, you mean a new default connection, or with the same settings as before? That's proably a really stupid question, but I want to make sure. The OS is XP by the way.
RadishTM Veteran Posted June 30, 2003 Veteran Share Posted June 30, 2003 Freeserve has a 2 hour connection cut-off .... Check Internet Explorer's settings > Connections > Click connection in question > Settings > Advanced > Check the disconnect times .... Radish. [ Rich ]
It's not disconnection times. I'm not a dumbass, I know when a connection times out. It just randomly disconnects occasionally, usually when browsing.
Lerch
I assume that you are using a bt phone line (uk), i have had this problem alot with my mums computer. It could be someone trying to call, and/or leaving a message on bt answer service (1571). Try adding into the dialing properties the code to disable any answering service she has got. I'm still trying to figure this one out as well.
cjbeckwith
Taking for granted we are speaking of a British telephone connection, I don't really know how much they differ from here in the States. That being said, do you have call waiting disabled? If you are trying to connect at 56k and are dropping, if you back it off to 33.6 or 28 does it help at all? Is this a fairly rural location? When I have to work on rural connections it goes without saying that if they get anything greater than 14.4 they should consider themselves blessed! [ Rich ]
Yes, it's a british BT line. Not sure about Call Waiting, as it's my girlfriend's line, I will talk to her later on and see if she knows. It is London, so I guess it's not really a particularly rural location :p How would you back it off to 33.6?
