The Consoles Battlefield

What record sales?

The ones where they keep beating their own previous sales for the same months. They are growing in sales, not dropping or staying flat. For example, here is another record the broke (they are trying to break their own records each year, each month, each holiday).

http://www.gamegrep....h_for_xbox_360/

Microsoft has revealed that last month was the most profitable February in the Xbox 360's history. According to NPD figures, the console outsold its competitors in the hardware chart with 422,000 units shifted. The platform also enjoyed considerable success in the software charts, capturing four of the top ten positions. BioShock 2 was the bestselling 360 title of the month and third-party game sales exceeded $170 million (£110 million).

and from February of 2010 they sold 422,000

and from February of 2009 they sold 391,000

and from February of 2008 they sold 254,000

and from February of 2007 they sold 228,000

and from February of 2006 they sold 160,000

So, using that as the most recent example, this is where they keep breaking records. On average, they continue to climb, not fall.

Yes, ignore the other 11 months of the year and the overall down trend in the orignal graph. No doubt there will be spikes, but the records they are "breaking" are really imaginary at best, top the Wii and you are doing something (which they have done a couple times). I'm not knocking the 360, as I've stated repeatedly, just this marketing blurb disguised as "records" or accomplishments.

I wasn't ignoring other months. I just chose the most recent one. If I had time, I could go through and post the stats for the other 60 months, but I don't have time, do you? BTW, the majority of those are also INCREASES year over year as well.

Again, sales are UP, not down, not flat.

Which is why I don't understand how the Wii is selling so well. Let's be fair, it's games catalogue is hardly brilliant. Yes there are one or two decent titles but on the whole it's 3rd party shovelware nonsense.

The Wii is selling well because it reaches new audiences. It brings new people to gaming. And it has massive hits like Wii Sports and NSMBW that are actual console-sellers. What a "decent" title is depends on one's perspective.

I see you're pushing that blog with no source again.

I see you are unable to handle rational arguments, so you resort to simply dismissing anything you don't like.

You really need it to be spelt out for you?

Price drop + new hardware = sales

Like the Nintendo DS Lite and DSi?

plus the mentality that "games sell consoles" is really an outdated way of thinking/marketing

I know more people that bought a ps3 as a blu-ray player/media center and a casual gaming unit than an actual full-time hardcore gaming unit

And the Wii still outsells the PS3, despite the PS3 being boought as a non-gaming system. A pretty pathetic showing for the PS3, then.

If games don't sell consoles, how come NSMBW massively boosted Wii console sales?

Er yes? You do realize that the NDSl has sold 88 million alone? That's not including figures of the DSi or XL or even the original. The DSi accounts for another 20 million (and that was in one year).

You really have no idea what you're talking about do you? So run along to your favourite blog & find an article you can maybe use to post another pathetic 5 word remark.

I'll submit my prediction roughly 6 months before this generation ends  That way I'll be right.

Way too early to be calling anything IMO, a generation isn't over until it's over. I thought Tom's Guide would write better gaming articles than something you'd expect to see from a personal blog posted through N4G.

In terms of exclusives, it has a few but many of them aren't as big as the 360 exclusives. A good number flopped or didn't live up to expectations (Killzone 2, Lair, Haze, Resistance, MAG), of which almost none of the 360 exclusive AAA titles did (Gears of War 2 and ODST maybe?). Attachment rate for games on the 360 are high, as oppose to the PS3. I have seen many games die once a newer MP game is released on the PS3 (Warhawk, for example) while most 360 games retain a large, dedicated population (even Chromehounds had thousands of dedicated players and most people here have never heard of it).

Just wanted to say that this isn't true from my experience. I continue to play Warhawk regularly and there are still quite a few (at least over 100 unofficial) servers online when i play.

It's still one of my favourite games on the current gen systems.

You get to know who talks our their arse around here

There was a Warhawk tournament & price drop not that long ago (6 days?), it's probably the PS3s most supported online title - http://blog.us.plays...ournament-2010/

edit: In fact the competition is on-going for a month, started on the 2nd of this month.

The only reason I haven't picked up the title is becuase every person I have asked about the game has told me they got rid of it because the online community died. I'm not talking out my arse, as you say. If those who played the game said it community died, then I'm inclined to believe them. Besides, that is one example. From those I have asked, the PS3 community jumps from one big online game tot he next leaving minimal online communities in their wake.

I love your posts. So refreshingly biased, it's untrue.

Keep it up.

Oh, and before believing your other incredibly biased friends on PS3 matters I suggest doing a little research first. In the long run it will avoid you looking rather silly on a public forum and losing all credibility.

Have a fun weekend.

Ok, and both of these were more expensive than the DS, not less. So what does that say about your "price cut + new hardware" claim?

Cause you would know my friends. FYI - These are people who enjoy the PS3 over the Xbox or own the console exclusively. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong but this is the first I've heard different. I make it a point to get my information from people who are, I don't know, qualified to give it. By the way, trolling is a poor practice. If you wan't to reply to me, reply. Don't make a statement without backup. You haven't touched my credibility at all since you haven't even made a point to do so. All you've done is enter the topic, point a finger, and leave as if that makes you right. It doesn't, hate to break it to ya. Especially considering this activity Audio is talking about is only recent judging by other sources:

http://community.eu.playstation.com/t5/Warhawk/Warhawk-active/m-p/10360685

http://myhawk.org/community-activity.html - (this graph shows that the player count is declining steadily and there is really no reliable account for activity before this year).

Enough "research" for ya?

I didn't need to back up my claim of you losing credibility, you were doing a fine job all on your own.

Anyway, you contine believing what you want, and I'll continue to own, play and enjoy both the PS3 and 360.

If you really were so indifferent you wouldn't have replied to my post. So why don't you start being constructive to the topic rather than running away the moment I present a challenge?

The DS Lite was cheaper than the original and has sold way more units than it ever did. DSi is the same price as the DS Lite at launch.

PS2 slim: cheaper than PS2 fat

PS3 slim: cheaper than PS3 fat

The only reason you believe it to be more expensive is because shops lower their prices to get rid of the old stock & making way for new products. That's nothing new or exclusive to the gaming industry.

I'm pretty sure the DS Lite was more expensive, but I know for sure that the DSi was more expensive. The new DS is even more expensive than that.

So PS3 slim was more expensive than the regular PS3 on launch day?
