Creating Facebook style link embed?

Question

Hey everyone,

I'm looking to build into a website user contributed links that would post like facebook's links with a specified word limit of text grab and option of thumbnail from images on the page. I'd like to make it as easy as possible for users to contribute relevant links to the website and facebook's links are so incredibly simple. The problem is I'm not wishing for simply video to be submitted, I'm more looking for people to link to relevant articles so grabbing text would be the most important.

So would this take a team of expert coders to create something like this as facebook would surely have on hand or is there something publicly available with this functionality that I could implement into my website? I'm guessing it is the former and I'll have to run with a more manual approach but thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

Cheers

That wouldn't be too hard the text, just using file_get_contents and some text replacement (EG/ it comes into a WYSIWYG and they can select what text and image is used)

thanks for your reply and welcome to neowin.

I feel the problem with that is making it grab only the content of the site which is the news and not the adverts, menus, and other bits and pieces around the site. knowing what tags to look between for the grab is difficult because each site would be different. otherwise you are left grabbing the whole page and it wouldn't make much difference to asking them to upload the picture and copy and past the first 50 words of the article manually. I was wanting to make it user friendly for people who aren't even familiar with getting image urls from websites as I imagine my website won't be attracting tech savvy users
