Ironman273
PS3 Owners May Get Cash Back After OtherOS Uninstall Who cares if you've never even heard of the ability to run alternative operating systems on your PS3—you could potentially be in for a small windfall under consumer protection laws. As the story goes, Iapetus at the NeoGAF forums took the issue up with Amazon (who sold him the PS3), quoting a European consumer protection law that states all products bought must be "fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase," netting him £84 ($130) in the process. He didn't have to return his PS3, nor be within warranty—certainly worth taking up with your retailer, if you've still got the receipt. Though this particular law will only apply to you if you live in Europe—any idea on similar laws in the US, folks? Firmware update 3.21 could prove to be a very costly affair for Sony and retailers. Source: Gizmodo Edit: Yes, after posting I thought maybe it was posted in the PS3 losing Linux thread and sure enough... Mods, do as you will. (I still think it deserves a thread of its own)

SkyDX
I bought it from the German retailer MediaMarkt a year ago that means I could get some money back for getting a Slim? Awesome!^^

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 9, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 9, 2010 I bought it from the German retailer MediaMarkt a year ago that means I could get some money back for getting a Slim? Awesome!^^ Unlikely, Amazon are awesome for things like this (CS), I doubt very much many other retailers will follow suit. Nothing legal was entailed, just Amazon deciding to do this, I followed the story on NeoGAF. Still everyone should try, but don't have high expectations. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 9, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 9, 2010 Slim was never advertised for Linux He means get money back for his fat to put towards a slim. I only know though as he mentioned that in the Penguin killing firmware topic.
SkyDX
Slim was never advertised for Linux Sorry I wrote it a bit wrong.... I have a FAT, but with the money I could buy another Slim^^ As for Consumer Protection, MediaMarkt was always VERY friendly with me. My old Razer Copperhead had a broken cable and was out of warranty and they replaced it for free... I lost the receipt of my Razer Mamba and wanted to return it since one of its feet got loose, guess what? I told them the truth and got it replaced too! red.
Like i said in the other thread, i doubt Game (where i bought it from) would do this so i'm not going to try. Unless someone wants to try first and let me know of the results :p

chicken-royal
If it turns out Sony are footing the bill and not Amazon, I'll email them. The removal of Other OS isn't Amazon's fault.

Livin in a box
Don't bother with that, send an email to customer services first and then see what they say and take it further if they say so. Writing a letter to the head of GAME or whatever will most likely just be ignored.

Brian M. Veteran Posted April 9, 2010 Veteran Share Posted April 9, 2010 I contacted Toys R Us when this started (as I'm in the 0.00001% who DO use the Other OS feature :p) and they basically said "screw you". Trading standards say it's down to Sony, and whether you can contest that the "we can do anything we like" clause in the T&C is unfair. Then you have another problem, that it's just an EULA, not a formal contract. Getting ANYTHING from this (in the UK anyway) will be incredibly tricky. Livin in a box
I've sent one to Gamestation, so hopefully they'll reply by tomorrow- I asked them more or less what I could do about it, so they can't really give me the cold shoulder...Unless they're just rude. Writing a letter to the head of GAME or whatever will most likely just be ignored. I'd write to GAME customer services. I had nothing but nightmares with their online customer services team about a year a go - one would say one thing, then another would say another and my minor problem became a major headache. Was only when I finally wrote to them that it got sorted out and I even got a phone call from their head of customer services offering me a free game. :)
Livin in a box
Well I'll see how this goes first before writing to them. I'm not absolutely desperate and emailing them could prove easier if it gets sorted this way.
