+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 20, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 20, 2010 infact the Game store i purchased mine from were pushing this feature like crazy. Sounds like retarded employees, considering Linux on the PS3 cannot be used for gaming in anyway except from playing a SNES emulator if you're lucky. thechronic
Its not just retarded Game employees though is it. Sony did push the 'Other OS' feature and it appealed to many. They were not trying to market the playstation 3 as a gaming console, but rather a 'Super Computer' and a potential replacement for the Personal Computer. Found a slightly better example here

Found a slightly better example here A super computer is of no use to a general gamer/consumer no matter what way you swing it. Not to mention who the **** outside of large companies/research facilities could afford 20/30/40+ PS3s? Hence why pretty much no one uses Linux on the PS3, and those that do or have will tell you how crippled it is compared to installing it on a semi-decent PC. YDL for the PS3 hasn't been updated in 8 or 9 months. So yes, very retarded gaming employees if they're working in a games store and were trying to use Linux as a reason to sell the console to gamers/people buying on behalf of a gamer. If I were the manager of that store I'd of had them selling it through the games/PSN content/Free multiplayer/Blu Ray support/etc. Things people might actually use. However why would anyone serious about either do it on the PS3 instead of their PC? And as I said in the other topic, the PS3 OS is a far better media center than Linux because Linux has cripped GPU access which = no hardware acceleration, 1080p unplayable and 720p only barely playable if you setup VLC correctly. I really don't think you understand how crap Linux is on the PS3.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 21, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 21, 2010 Playback on YDL looks smooth on this video: Shark Tale, animation, it's probably encoded to a low bitrate. Point is absolutely no one would use Linux for a media server, it's vastly inferior to the PS3 OS. Try playing a 1080p 10-20MBPs AVC encode with DTS through Linux

Whether the majority used it, there are going to be some out there that did and now are very much within their rights to feel aggrieved by the move. And I'm within my rights to tell people how castrated it was when they clearly haven't used it and are claiming it's good for this/that when it's really not. Unlike the vast majority of people whining about the removal on NW, I've actually used YDL, albeit a long time ago, but nothing much has changed since. Hypervisor still leads to crippled GPU access and homebrew scene died before it even started.
Max_Payne_UK
Yes, YDL on the PS3 was poor at best. Personally, I'm glad it's gone. It could (not sure if possible) release a little more power for the developers?

Actually i have used it and thought it was reasonable, i didn't expect much but like others was hoping for a Linux to come that would be allowed to take advantage of the PS3's hardware, therefore making it perform better. You are missing the point i am trying to make. I am not saying that it performs amazingly at blistering speeds, rather that Sony were hyping this up to be something special, put in half of what was suggested and then removed the feature completely. This is why people are mad.

All I'm saying is that people are quite right in feeling upset with Sony that a feature they 'may' have considered a deciding factor has now been removed from the machine. This is why people are mad. Fair enough, but I do have to raise the point since when has Linux ever been "special"? It's userbase on PC's is only a couple of % or something, it's not like there was even a huge buzz about it before the PS3 came along. Now it seems Linux is the most popular thing ever.... Max_Payne_UK
Did Sony hype it up to be something special? I don't remember that? End of the day, you can thank the hackers for the removal of the OtherOS feature. If they weren't hell bent on trying to hack into everything this wouldn't have happened. You'd be suprised how many have heard of it, if not tried it on their own machine or others, especially now there are netbooks cropping up everywhere! It wasn't Linux that Sony were just pushing though, they were discussing developing their own Operating System for the console.

Which is what the PS3 OS is... their own operating system Yellow Dog Linux created a Linux distro especially for the PS3, you might be confused with that, but Sony were never planning on creating their own Linux distro. tiagosilva29
Getting ANYTHING from this (in the UK anyway) will be incredibly tricky. Nope. Sony is trading the the EU and must abide with its rules. They can put all they want in the terms of service. Go directly to Sony and make them very clear: or they refund you the money or expect to be ass****ed by the EU and your own mass-class lawsuit. If you want, I'll contact any non-armchair lawyers from my family and ask them to redact a template letter for you all. Sony can't do what they did according to both the Portuguese and EU trade laws. I don't own a Playstation, in fact, the only consoles I have are a Sega Saturn and a Game Boy classic. The only reason why I'm raging with all this is due to the "<company> can do all they want" bull**** inseminated everywhere (context: EU).
