Max_Payne_UK
Sony did though, and as of yet there have been no mass lawsuits. If they had broken the law as clearly as you state, Sony would be dragged through every European court.

Max_Payne_UK
Amazing to watch them squirm trying defend this move by Sony. 'Them'? 'Squirm'? Nobody is squirming. I'm simply stating the facts. There are NO lawsuits in Europe sueing Sony for the removal of OtherOS. Why? They haven't got a case. Clearly.

Brian M. Veteran Posted April 21, 2010 Veteran Share Posted April 21, 2010 Nope. Sony is trading the the EU and must abide with its rules. They can put all they want in the terms of service. Go directly to Sony and make them very clear: or they refund you the money or expect to be ass****ed by the EU and your own mass-class lawsuit. Only happened in the PS2. Not so easy - you have no legal contract with Sony whatsoever. Your contract is with the retailer (unless you bought it from Sony directly, then it's another matter). +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 21, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 21, 2010 If you want, I'll contact any non-armchair lawyers from my family and ask them to redact a template letter for you all. Sony can't do what they did according to both the Portuguese and EU trade laws. I don't own a Playstation, in fact, the only consoles I have are a Sega Saturn and a Game Boy classic. The only reason why I'm raging with all this is due to the "<company> can do all they want" bull**** inseminated everywhere (context: EU). Go ahead then instead of venting on a forum, if all these people doing that had a case a lawsuit would successfully be in place by now, but it isn't. Not even from sue happy America. Either people don't care outside of venting online (hard to believe considering the "uproar"), or no one genuinely has a case and the whole legal department which exists at Sony um, did their job? Max_Payne_UK
Ok. Well, prove me wrong. I'm open to that! I'm not saying that Sony should have removed the feature here, don't mistake me for saying that.

Livin in a box
If that guy hadn't got some money from Amazon for removal of the feature, nothing would have happened. Everyone's just jumping on that bandwaggon. But being annoyed at Sony for removing it is another thing. I personally am a little frustrated even if I didn't use it for the people who did. It just shows you what these big corporations can do.

Hedon
Everyone's just jumping on that bandwaggon. Some are, and some are not. It was a popular feature. I hadn't used it yet, but I was planning to do so once I finally got a larger harddrive.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 22, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 22, 2010 Define popular? I bet less than 1% of the global userbase used it. It's popular now because of the idea of piracy. However enjoy waiting on Geohot, he's done jack **** since that supposed proof video citing taxes, and now the iPad. Sony just changed to 3.30, the further they get away the larger headache it will probably cause, who knows what other changes they're making behind the scenes to the FW. 1337ish
I suppose you think Sony can do no wrong Audioboxer, its good to have priniciples I suppose.... That whole rootkit fiasco was not a problem as the cd was only bought by 1% of the population. Its not popular enough so not a problem. I am surprised you defend sony so much and so blindly. It is NOT acceptable to remove a feature that was used (and I dont care if you didnt tbh, I did thus it WAS used) by the customers. Your argument is you dont mind them removing crap as long as you dont think its used.... such a fail. I suppose the next thing to go would be that cruddy PSN Home as its not used by the majority. Actually lets strip all the stuff out and leave us all with a shiny black box, it still has sony on it so it must be good. Fanboys drives me mad, this thread is just as trashy now as a Apple thread with fanboy defense about "you didnt really need it" I think I will decide if I need/use it. Max_Payne_UK
It was removed because it posed a security risk. I'd rather have a secure system than one that gets ripped to bits. While I don't agree fully with Sony removing it, it had to be done. The minority used the feature, so it was the 'best' option. I don't think anybody is blindly following Sony. Noveed
Probably not, it didn't hurt to send the email and an independant report isn't going to find anything wrong with the console so I would end up being out of pocket. It was worth a shot, never mind. Depends who you take the console to for the report, A friend of mine registered a console repair business many moons ago and used to do reports for faulty stuff. I think he made some of the stuff up in the reports just to get the manufacturers to repair/replace.

Secure system was to do with running ripped games, not hacking your account/system. TBH they should have patched the hole rather then removing it but sony said in the past they cant be bothered to update the low level drivers etc. Thats one reason the slim didnt get it as it required a new batch for the hardware. If its such a little used feature there is no security risk and by removing the feature from slims they have inheritely cured the problem as old ps3's die etc. It would naturally have died out if they hadnt done this and even then the ability to run ripped games was supposidly very very hard to do. Eh? Of course there is. If only 10 people used it, but found a hole into the PS3 OS, it's a securtiy risk that Sony don't want in their system. Hedon
Define popular? I bet less than 1% of the global userbase used it. Opinion noted. I don't think anybody is blindly following Sony. Some are. Eh? Of course there is. If only 10 people used it. My link Gamers around the world are still furious over Sony?s recent decision to remove the popular ?OtherOS? feature from their PlayStation 3?s. This feature allowed gamers to install Linux and other popular Operation System?s onto their PS3. Once an important selling point early in the console?s life, Sony entirely removed the feature in the slimmed down 120GB PS3, which released last September. However, the option was still available to all of the earlier models of the PlayStation 3?s?the ?Fat? models. Sony made the decision to remove the feature, from all models, when noted iPhone jailbreaker known as Geohot ?100% hacked the PS3?. Obviously, this worried Sony, as they would not allow their behemoth vulnerable to hacking, which would lead down the road to open piracy. So earlier this month, they removed the feature from all versions of the console, via firmware 3.21. Gamers who did not want to download the mandatory update would not be able to play the newest version of Blu-Rays or connect to the PlayStation Network. With this incident, many gamers are crying foul play and are demanding reimbursement for their console. Unfortunately, it seems like Sony won?t be playing that game.
