The PS3

Recommended Posts

You can't deny that the PS3 has already had a cracking 2010, with big hitters like Heavy Rain and God of War III already out of the starting blocks. And although Gran Turismo 5 is still set for later this year, none of the above can match up with this year's finest title, the one I literally can't stop playing… Yes, it's ModNation Racers.

Seriously, it's like an addiction. When I'm away from my trusty PlayStation I'm dreaming up new tracks, new Mod designs and new ideas for karts. I'm sketching out layouts on scraps of paper, I'm doodling skins for my drivers, and I'm looking real-life customised cars to get some ideas on vehicles of my own. I think I might need help.

The in-game statistics screen backs up my fears: I'm hooked. Whilst Heavy Rain and God Of War were blasted through for review reasons, this time I'm allowed a bit of breathing space, chance to soak everything up and make the most of what the game can offer, and you know what – it's a revelation. Jealous? You should be.

Regular readers will know I'm a fairly tolerant type when it comes to videogames, but whilst I appreciate any game that floats my boat visually, or with nice gameplay mechanics, anything that lets me get my creative hat on immediately goes to the top of the pile – and MNR (we're on acronym terms, now) is literally my ideal game.

And it should be yours, too. Once it hits the shelves the online side will explode, not only with races galore and some tightly fought time trials, but also the sharing aspect will kick into gear and we'll be able to meet up on each other's tracks, check out (and remix) our friends' karts and mods, and even rate everything we come across.

So, yes, whilst MNR is 'just' a kart racer on the surface, underneath it all it's so much more. I've not been this enthusiastic about a PS3 game for many months, but I can't wait to see what happens once the game is released. Until then, I'm heading back to the Mod Spot to do so last minute changes to my Mayan Mystery track.

We'll have videos soon, stay tuned…

I'll post the videos once up. Hope this one gets some awareness, with 4 player split screen I'll def be getting it for nights I have folk over but I want the online well populated and good tracks made as well. At least it's far more user friendly to create stuff than LBP - For those that don't want to spend hours that is.

They said LittleBigPlanet would change the game too. Don't get me wrong: it was a great game, but that "user-created content" novelty wore off pretty quickly once people realized they sucked at creating levels. :p

I disagree. The LBP community is still thriving. Some of the levels out there are superb. I feel that this game (Modnation Racers) will do the same. I've only seen videos of it but it looks great fun

If you can't make a level in this you shouldn't be allowed a games console :p

I have to admit the 4 player splitscreen makes this tempting for me as someone who grew up playing Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing with friends/family.

It's just that whenever i think of this title, for some reason i can't think of it being something other than a PSN title so i'll probably end up getting it when it becomes cheaper.

Think LBP mixed with Mario Kart and you come up with this beauty.

Ah...well then, not my cup of tea. Though, I can see the premise kicking butt for those interested. Nice.

It's a real shame it won't be released on the PSN.

I watched the GiantBomb video above again (the creation part, starts about 10 mins in), I'm so re-creating the Neowin Logo as a track

What'll make this game thrive is the ease of creating levels. Don't get me wrong, LBP's system was great and some of the creations are astonishing, but many (including me) have been put off by the time and effort needed to make something decent.

LBP's downfall was how indepth the tools were (ok maybe not that indepth). What I mean is they were easy to use, hard to master. You could easily make something that absolutely sucked to play.

When you make simple tools in level creators (think Far Cry on Xbox), then you can really see the power of community content. I think Modnation Racers will get it right. Biggest exclusive though? Ha, what about GoW3 :p

We have LBP on the PS3 and PSP (we being my son and I). It's a cute game, not my thing though. I play it with him on occasion.

Although I OWN LBP, I never even touched the level creator. I personally just don't care for it. I think the biggest reason is that the reward system came from the SP game which unlocked parts of the level creator.

I think if they created a reward system in the level creator FOR the level creator, I might have been a little more interested.

Plus, browsing the user-created levels were horrrrrible.

My interest isn't really sparked for Mod Nation Racers. I'm not a huge kart fan (although I loves me some Mario) and not enough to want to design my own tracks
