Walmart Testing Out Christian Games Market

Recommended Posts

Although a niche market, the Christian video game market could be an important one, believes Troy Lyndon, CEO of Left Behind Games. According to an SEC filing uncovered by Stock Market Quarterly, Left Behind Games "will be featured in a limited number of Walmart stores covering a broad area of states. This new market test is a follow-up to the marketing trial conducted in approximately 100 Walmart stores in Texas during the 2009 Christmas sales season."

Walmart is potentially interested in distributing the Christian games nationally, but the retailer is looking to see additional performance in a broader region first. "Allowing us to further test our sales model regionally will provide us with ongoing market insight and a chance to enhance sales. Our Walmart strategy continues to be validated as we focus on placement, promotions and sales for the 2010 holiday gift giving season, when a majority of games are sold," said Lyndon.

Left Behind Games is about to close on its merger with Digital Praise (announced back in February) and the company is hopeful that it will witness an expanded Christian games category at key general market retailers. Christian products in general have gained some momentum in recent years. Walmart, for example, has been selling Christian/Gospel music and fictional and non-fictional Christian books for many years. It remains to be seen, however, if video games will have the same following.

Bad ones apparently. I seem to remember a bit of an uproar about the violence in the first Left Behind game.

Exactly, I saw clips of that game and it wasnt very christian like to me and goes against what the whole left behind book and movie series was about in general. Certain things like that should not be made into a game. I find it more blasphemous than helpful.

As a "Christian gamer" myself (as in, a Christian who plays video games, but not necessarily "Christian" ones), I have to be honest and admit that I for one have little interest in playing these games. I havn't played them and I suppose they could be a valuable asset to Christian parents who want to let their children play video games without letting them play the ultra-violent, super-sexual variety, but from what I've seen, their production values are questionable. It's like Christian music--I won't listen to Christian music just because it's Christian, but I will if it's good music. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any good Christian video games (although I say that as one who has never played any).

"You loved the Bible, Now live it! Become a slave, kill Jesus, Impregnate women without vaginal sex. All the great things are there, don't like an animal? wipe it out with a flood!"
