My band's new website

Question

Hi everyone!

I just launched the new website for my band Stroave.

Spent about a month designing and coding it. Pretty satisfied with the result, but some feedback is always welcome. :)

Check it out if you want: stroave.com

Thanks in advance!

1st impression - very professional looking, smart design and nicely laid out, easy to navigate - well done !

1 criticism - Get some different photos !! Loads looking the same :)

Yeah I'm still hoping to get some live photos. These photos are just from one single photoshoot, so I hope the photographer will send me some good shots from one of our gigs.

Indeed, professional.

One thing to do, instead of linking the background image using html, do it using CSS. Way more effective, also optimize the background image. It does take some time to load it.

I really like this. I think the menu would be better if there was a hover effect of some sort though; just something simple like the colour changing (just like 'news' is a different colour when you're on the home page).

P.S. Your song 'Tonight' is great ;) That's the only one I've heard at the moment :p

I agree with everyone so far, I am very impressed.

I was expecting something that was just thrown together and rather unprofessional looking. I am pleasantly surprised to find the exact opposite.

Really great job! (Y)

Aye, very very nice. Exceptionally clean, gets the point across, won't confuse the user. Very good.

Get a header title and a favicon, though :)

I like it a lot. Possibly vertically centre the page, that might make it look neater on higher resolution monitors considering your design is nice and compact.

Great suggestions! I'll get to work on a favicon to start!

The background image size changes through Javascript, so that it stays centered and has the correct aspect ratio. I'm not sure if I can pull that off using the CSS method. I'll need to experiment a bit.

I'll definitely look into the optimizing though, thanks. :)

It's pretty good, I'm impressed. Good music too, I hope you do well.

Thank you very much! We'll be playing an "acoustic" version of 'Tonight' on our tv appearance tomorrow. I'll add videos to the website hopefully this week. :)

That's a good idea. I should test how it will look when there's more vertical content though.

Thanks again for all the feedback. You people are the best! :D

I added a favicon. Best thing I could come up with in 16*16px and with our logo. I'll change it though if I think of something better. :)

Also made the a:hover addition on the top menu.

for your navigation at the top, try doing something flashier with the underlining part. some ideas ive seen before:

change the color so that when you hover over it, not just the text changes color, the underline (which im assuming you're using a border to show) changes color. http://mashable.com/ does this well.

or

get rid of the border-bottom and only have it be shown for the page that you're on, or if you hover over it.

right now that border is erking me because every time i hovered over one of the links, they did nothing. i want them to be apart of the links themselves, right now they're kind of just floating there. tie them to the links a little better and it'll look awesome!

good luck!

edit: also want to add that i tested it on my other monitor that is 1024x768 and there was a little horizontal scrolling. not sure if you are designing for resolutions bigger than that, but a lot of computers still use that resolution, so you may want to consider making it a little thinner.

Thanks for the suggestion! I updated the site. :) It does look better.

I'm not sure if I can squeeze the site some more, it's pretty thin as it is. But you're right. More people than I expected still use that resolution! I'll look into it. :)

Also, the media page now includes our first videoclip. My friend who edited it just sent it to me, so I uploaded it right away.

Theres some space on the sides, at least the left hand side where you have your background image. i would cut that out of the layout, and then make it a 2pixel x 1000 pixel (or w/e the layout's height is set at) and then just have it repeat along the x-axis. This way if someone goes ot your site that uses a larger resolution, it will cover the entire area. http://www.atebits.com/tweetie-iphone/ does this very well. notice how no matter how large your window is set, the header/background continues to be drawn across? its a pretty simple trick that'll go a long ways.

of course you could rewrite everything to use percentages. but thats a bit of a hassle.

Yes I do! You can find mp3's and a video on the media page -> http://stroave.com/?p=media

The background image should stretch nicely already. JavaScript is taking care of that. But I admit I haven't thoroughly tested any other resolutions.

I'll get on that though!

Excellent. Thank you for taking my suggestion on board :) It looks very nice and adds a touch more interaction to the site.

Great. I'll be sure to look out for it

Why not use this:

body { background: url(bg.jpg) center center; }
