Study: PS3 Has Highest Percentage Of Connected Consoles

Recommended Posts

Research firm The Diffusion Group said that in the U.S., the PlayStation 3 has the highest percentage of broadband connected consoles when compared to Xbox 360 and Wii.

Seventy-eight percent of PS3 users have the console connected to the internet, while Xbox 360 has 73 percent and Wii has 54 percent, according to Diffusion Group director of research Michael Greeson.

"Today's game consoles are increasingly connected to the internet, not just to enhance their gaming experience but to access the growing variety of online media-video," he said. Diffusion Group's survey polled 2,000 adult broadband users in the U.S.

The firm said that it predicts that video game consoles are "best positioned to become the first mainstream over-the-top (OTT) video delivery platform."

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 allow users to buy or rent movies and download TV shows. Along with the Wii, all three consoles now allow for Netflix streaming video. Greeson said that a quarter of Wii owners in the U.S. already subscribe to Netflix's DVD by mail service, a subscription that allows automatic access to Netflix's large library of streaming online content.

Well, not a surprise, since going online with a modded Xbox will get you banned. :D

This....

But really there is no reason NOT to have the PS3 connected to the net if possible given it's a free service. Even those that bought it just as a media player would be gaining from BD Live, iPlayer (UK) and VidZone.

Don't forget the convenience of built-in wireless.

My nephew has a 360 but it's not hooked up to the internet because his mom only has a wireless service for her laptop... poor kid lol

Isnt a xbox live silver account considered "connected" ?

Probably, but there aren't very many that use it- to be able to connect you'd have to have bought a wireless device or wired, and you wouldn't do that just to get access to updates and look in the Marketplace.
