Touchscreen PSP Incoming?

Recommended Posts

PSLS recently reported that the ESRB had revealed 13 new PSP titles.

One specific title, Finger Connection seems to suggest that a touchscreen is coming for the PlayStation Portable or maybe even a PSP phone or PSP2 (although the platforms for these games do not suggest this). Take a look at the game's description:

"This is a multiplayer party game in which players spin a wheel that tells them to place their fingers on colored spots on a board. Players lose if their hands become too twisted to place their finger on the chosen spot."

This game sounds a lot like Twister, but I don't see how it could be any fun if you were playing it with digital fingers. In fact, all 13 titles seem to fit perfectly with touchscreen gameplay, so is a touchscreen PSP or the elusive PSP phone coming sooner than we thought?

If there's a new PSP at E3 it has to be PSP2, not a revision of the current PSP.

Another new PSP? How long ago did the Go! come out?

In North America and Europe, October 1st, 2009.. and in Japan, November 1st 2009.

It was also a colossal failure..

Reviews of the PSPgo have been mixed. It is criticized for its pricing with Ars Technica calling it "way too expensive" and The Guardian stating that cost is the "biggest issue" facing the machine. Engadget points out that the Go costs only $50 less than the PlayStation 3, which comes equipped with a Blu-ray player. Wired point out that the older PSP 3000 model is cheaper, whilst supporting UMDs and IGN states that the $50 price increase makes it a "hard sell". The lack of support for UMDs and the inability to transfer games bought on UMD onto the Go and the placement of the analog stick next to the d-pad has also been criticized.Reviewers also commented on how the change from a mini-USB port to a proprietary port means that hardware and cables bought for previous incarnations of the PSP are not compatible. The Go's screen has been positively received with Ars Technica calling the image "brilliant, sharp and clear", T3 state that "pictures and videos look great". The controls have received mixed reviews with The Times describing them as "instantly familiar" whereas CNET and Stuff call the position of the analog stick "awkward".The ability to use a PS3 controller was praised by the New Zealand Herald but Ars Technica criticized the need to connect the controller and Go to a PS3 for the process to work.

If Sony want to compete with Nintendo 3DS, I'm sure they are heading to the touchscreen route sooner or later either by adding a touchscreen with 3D functionality or just a plain touchscreen.

Possibly a touch screen/phone combo, with a vanilla touch screen gaming only device for less.

Another new DS? How long ago did the the previous DS variation come out?

Anyways, this is to counter the 3DS and the iPod Touch and Windows Phone 7 w/X Live. E3 is going to be interesting this year. :D

Yep, this year E3 will be HOT, and I'm sure that we can see a lot of 3D-handheld gadgets popping out there.
