3D Dot Game Heroes Review(s)

First one is up,

IGN - 8.5

Closing Comments

It's hard to criticize 3D Dot Game Heroes for invoking Shigeru Miyamoto, widely recognized as gaming's most important figure, as its muse. 3D Dot Game Heroes offers a repackaged vintage gaming experience with obvious, but appropriate, improvements in graphics and presentation while leaving some elements -- like a frustrating difficulty -- untouched. Other Zelda imitators seem to lose sight of the playfulness and irreverence that Miyamoto and others infused classic games with, but 3D Dot Game Heroes never pretends that it's anything but a game, and games like 3D Dot Game Heroes should be played.

9.0 - Presentation

An awesome fusion of vintage and contemporary game elements, 3D Dot Game Heroes greatly benefits from a surplus of style.

8.5 - Graphics

Sharp 2D sprites with a 3D makeover; some of the most unique and eye-catching visuals around.

6.5 - Sound

Old-school, perhaps to a fault; even the greatest tunes can get old on infinite repeat. The sound effects are appropriately awful.

8.5 - Gameplay

The cartoonish swordplay is a blast. A tried-and-true combination of exploration and dungeon-crawling, but it achieves a level of "retro" difficulty at times. Warning: May evoke nostalgia.

8.5 - Lasting Appeal

You can easily lose 20 hours here or race through it in less than 10. The minigames, character creation and New Game + should keep retro gamers busy until Zelda is available in HD.

I want that game so bad.

Yeah it's going on sale for $39.99, I'm picking it up when I'm on holiday in America :)

I've had my eye on this game for awhile now. Strangely, I thought it was already out. I'll probably pick it up the next time it shows up on my Amazon gold box.

Wonder how the game would have looked without the silly bevelled edges/darkened edges to all the "pixels". certainly more authentic to what it tries to be.

I know it's a stylistic choice in order to show that they're supposed to be pixels, but it's kinda silly and superfluous and I feel it would have looked better without.

Can we actually be a tank? :D

You can be anything you want, someone created a collection of smilies like the ones Neowin uses  I'll try find the video.

You can turn it off, and no it doesn't

Actually I prefer that, at least from a retro perspective.

what's witht he aliasing and crap shadows in that shot though ? early dev shot ? there no reason this game shouldn't have decent soft shadows and proper FSAA. I'm pretty sure they had at least much better FSAA in the other shots.

I really want this game however, I have to finish FF13 before I buy another game and I simply have not put the time into beating it yet.

Main reason why I haven't played Demon Souls yet is because it isn't out in the EU yet ;)

This game does look fun but I can't justify paying over ?25 for it for some reason. Plus I just got myself Yakuza 3 to play through :D

LOL, you're not gonna give up are you!

Well, I might get this game but already getting FF13 and Yakuza 3 as my games to play when I finish uni and maybe Mod-Nation Racers.

Game reminds me of playing Zelda on my GBA/GBC though which was great. So we'll see.

If I were you I'd just pre-order it and do it through quidco as well, and you can always cancel nearer the time if somewhere else is cheaper or you don't want it.

Cause aside from Shop-To at £26 nothing else comes close, and that code does expire tomorrow.
