360 Again Emerges Triumphant in Parental Control Test

Recommended Posts

Yet another examination of parental controls on the current crop of consoles has resulted in the Xbox 360 being labeled the best of the bunch.

A Game Informer editor created a scenario for his wife tasking her with adjusting parental controls for a pair of fictional teen boys on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii. The wife was chosen because of her lack of hands on time with the game machines.

A sampling of the article?s commentary and grades for each console are featured below:

Xbox 360 ? B+

Microsoft?s Xbox 360 interface was redesigned to make the system more accessible to non-gamers. Judging from how quickly my wife found the family settings, I?d say they succeeded.

Wii ? B

The trickiest part for her was finding where the settings were grouped. From there, it was a pretty simple ride?

PlayStation 3 ? C

The PlayStation 3?s controls were probably the trickiest for my wife to handle. They weren?t easy for her to find, and Sony?s way of handling restrictions is a little strange.

These results jibe with a similar test conducted by IGN earlier this year, which pitted the PS3 against the 360. In that case too, the IGN tester billed the 360 as easier to use and found the PS3?s numbering system confusing.

Shame no parents seem to use anything considering the amount of retarded kids playing online on consoles.

Heck some adults need their parents to pop round and restrict them from playing online.

Online console gaming has long been one of the most off-putting experiences of my life. At least in the most mainstream titles. Some smaller titles I can bear with.

Parental controls = unplugging the console and telling your kids they are NOT playing on it.

The world is a sad place to have to have these things.

Or is this to stop them purchasing stuff on the stores etc?

yes. Parental controls on the xbox lets you set what games they can play, what they can purchase, when they can play and all that.

Surely though the parents shouldn't be buying games that are unsuitable for children. Games consoles shoudn't need these, parents should be doing that job.

Funny thing. Parents sometimes buy games for themselves. This games sometimes are stored in shelves accessible by their children when parents aren't home. It's kinda shocking I know. but it's true.

Also you can borrow games from friends, steal them, or buy them form stores that really don't care that you're not 16 or 18.

That's why party chat is the best thing that happened to the online console space

Party Chat and Friends Only Chat = no more mouth breathers. Now, I just need the PS3 to enable this, then all mouth breathers would be gone from my gaming! :)

Seems easier to set live to only allow voice to friends rather than mute every poor sucker, especially with annoying mute systems like MW's where their supposed one button mute, requires you to be in the right menu, and verify with another button press on a submenu. and as soon as the round is over and there's a new round, the F'er is unmuted...

Well that system worked well for the Xbox for many years, according to the t'internet. Hopefully Sony will be able to implement something similar to the party chat, but in all honesty I'm not a huge fan of it. I feel it breaks up the community. Much of Live is just silence and I expect that's down to Party Chat? I'd heard the community on Live was great as well.

I much prefer the open mike, that way you can, and do, run into decent gamers who want to play. All, if not all my PS3 friends are from people I've met and chatted too online.

I wish there was a way to easily do both, but there clearly isn't

Yup, I know. I use it....over and over and over....hundreds if not thousands of times.
