Cable Connection Issues

Recommended Posts

I've had my ISP come out a few times to take a look at the problem but it still seems to occur more than it should; what happens is my Cable modem reboots itself or basically just goes dead. While monitoring the connection I found that the "Recieve" light on my Motorola Surfboard 4100 modem goes out, and then it resets itself I usually have to manually reset it for it to work again. Any ideas as to what the problem may be, because my ISP cant seem to fix it well

Thanks in Advance

Hello, have you checked the signal levels of your cable connection ?

Here's an example:

Downstream channel ID = 1

Downstream channel frequency = 469981751 Hz

Downstream received signal power = 7.7 dBmV

Upstream channel ID = 3

Upstream channel frequency = 33008000 Hz

SigQu: Signal to Noise Ratio = 36.5 dB (the higher the number, the better)

Cable modem status = Operational

Upstream transmit signal power = 44.0 dBmV (not to be over 50dBmV, 58 is critical)

To get to the diagnose page of your cable modem, read the modem's manual, or use: http://192.168.100.1 or http://10.0.x.x where x.x. are the last 2 numbers in your IP address...

Hope it helps...

Uh oh

Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB

QAM 64

Network Access Control Object ON

Power Level -2 dBmV

Frequency 32496000 Hz Ranged

Ranging Service ID 120

Symbol Rate 1.280 Msym/s

Power Level 57 dBmV << Ususally 48, recently 58 ever since it got hotter

What can I do about it? My ISP obviously cant seem to fix it for more than 5 minutes

not sure if this is the problem, but i've had similar things happen. in my case at least it's like it loses power completely then runs the boot sequence again, sometiems it won't come back on, so i have to unplug it and plug it back in, but i haven't had to manual reset it.

mine does the similar thing, but it gets worse as it gets hotter :s

last summer I only was able to get about 10 mins of stable connection time per 2 hours, and they sent people out about 6 times to "fix" it.

Maybe the modem is Faulty.... or the power to the modem (lead checks?)

I also have a problem but its related to No FEC lock using the same modem.

I think this is a line problem though, something to do with either the socket, or maybe the line itself, its possible to call the ISP for a signal test.

I was thinking about doing it, just to see if the line was ok.

Ill be calling them a little later, ill ask about a line test and stuff, and also about the 30GB DL/UL (either or) cap that automatically drops you to 12kB DL / 8 kB UL until the next month..... Im not very happy at this point

I will be calling also, but just over the line test. because the connection is just so unstable. It was off for almost 18 hours. I don't know anything about the 30GB/ download upload... whats that about ??

The connection's here are capped at about 500kb/s ( maybe alittle bit more ) and upload 10kb/s ( also depends on how many people are using the same line )....

I wouldn't be very happy either with 12kb/s Download and 8 upload.

Mine is about 200kB-1MB/sec, my connection gets worse as the day goes on.. heres the irony of it all.. they come to my house, pull out their line check thing, they tell me its fine, plug the modem back in and it works fine until theyre pulling out of my driveway 4 mins later and it dies again...

Thats about the same here in the morning ( when nobody is on the line ) as soon as people start jumping on at peak times. ie. 3 4 and 5 o'clock. The connection just goes, and doesn't appear till 2 or 3 hours later.

There maybe a way to test the line yourself, I don't know, or it maybe possible if you know anyone who is an ex cable Engineer to test the line. At least you know your safe then.

Yeah thats more or less what they did with mine. They reset the modem from their side, told me to wait 1 hour and then disconnect it. It worked for about 2 days then it was back to normal again, on one minuite, off the next.

If you said you had 48dBmV then 58 dBmV when it got hotter, (58 is near the top limit), try putting a 6dB attenuator on your cable, before connecting it to your cable modem.

If it helps, here is a screenshot of how the cable modem behaves if there is no signal on the cable network, or the cable has been recently cut... When the signal comes back the modem was resetted by the cable company...

DUDE! BE happy with a such a large quota!!! My ISP is super small and you can read about all my problems with it in the Speed thread(should be just below) but anyway my ISP has 7gb down+up and you get capped at 7.5kb dl/ul !!!!! So I'd say just be happy with that!

That signal checker doesn't work for me :s I've got a samsung info ranger is that why? I use 10.0.3.5 right? the last 2 digits in my IP is 35.

Im not worried about the cap so much except they never told anyone and theres no way I can check to see how much Ive used up..

Where would I get one of these??

Ah my current ISP, StuporWeb(Superweb) has their quota thing on their memeber's page which you only need your memeber info to access but the damn thing reads N/A alot lately  I mean if your going to integrate something so deeply into your bussiness plan at least maintain it responsibly  . But anyway, I hope you get everything straightened out and working for you.

Ask your cable company to put a 6dB attenuator....

I found out Radioshack has them so im gonna pay them a visit today, theyre inline so you just plug it in as usual and it adjusts by itself, ill give it a try :D
