BoneyardBrew Member Posted April 24, 2010 Member Share Posted April 24, 2010 This is a very solid release. Here are the things I noticed just after a quick test run. Fast, both the install and the browser itself. I think it actually beats Chromium in page rendering speed. Awesome work! Keeping Trident as a backup is a great feature for those pesky pages that just don't work right in anything but IE. The interface is nice, and the addition of a smooth scroll option out of the box is amazing! It is a little laggy at times, but works for the most part, and really well at that. The new tab page is something I also see myself using in the future, it is much better looking an Opera's Speed Dial or any other extension for any other browser I've seen. Keep up the great work! Maxthon really has a chance of giving the other top browsers a run for their money once 3.0 is released.
Fluxii Media
Not gonna lie, it runs fast. Using it as my default now to give it a full blown run through. Rendering is fast; but now here comes the problem: 3 tabs open, 129 MBs being used, closing a tab only dropped it down to 117 MB. Mind you that is not going to stall my system, but, I think that is pushing it a bit for just 2 tabs open now. The interface itself is slick though, but I wish they had a "Pin" tab feature, if they got that, I might just make the full switch to Maxthon... as scary as that may sound. :p
Mamoun
Please note that while this release is marked as beta, the features are far from complete, there would be a lot of new features added as it reaches the RC and the final.

I fell in love with them in Chrome and Firefox with App Tabs.
PreKe
It's just unfortunate that the Maxthon guys are a bunch of sleazeballs: http://blog.maxthon.com/?p=672 That "MaxthonGuy" character is a liar and a hack.
amon91
Looks solid, kinda like a blend between Chrome and Opera. Why not step up the engine and make it Webkit?

It does run on Webkit. It also has the option to switch to Trident on the fly if necessary.

iron2000
I'm waiting for them to add a sidebar. Hope that the add-ons system is good.

I'm sorry you took this impression of Maxthon team. I can assure you that this blog post (and other anti-firefox ones), while posted in the official blog, merely represent a personal opinion of "Maxthon Guy" and doesn't represent the Maxthon team as a whole, personal opinions usually find their way to this blog. The CEO, Jeff Chen is actually a very nice person who respects the competitors. Netanel Jacbosson, a former marketing and representative of Maxthon, have met before with the creators of Firefox and had a pleasant discussion with them. That certainly doesn't mean I agree with "Maxthon Guy" but I'm just telling you that these are his views, not Maxthon's as a whole.
Zer0_II
I see a lot of people make comments such as "Maxthon is still around?" whenever release updates are posted, but despite the fact that they don't receive much attention, they have done a great job of consistently remaining up to date with the most recent browser developments. I haven't installed and tested this build yet, but I'm about to. The interface is looking very nice, and appears to combine UI features from two of my favorite browsers, Chrome and Opera. I suppose the Chrome-like UI is becoming standard for all browsers now, which makes me wonder what the next evolution in browser UI's will be like. Maxthon also has a great set of out of the box features, with only Opera doing a better job of delivering in that area in my opinion. I can't wait to see what the final build has to offer. Fluxii Media
Quickly made the switch back to Chrome; This is definitely a BETA, I got loads of crashes all the time... from just basic browsing, to trying to hop on facebook. The concept of having Trident ready to go is alright, but I can just use IE Tab for Chrome to get the same experience. As for the add-ons system with Maxthon; I didn't find anything useful there. But to each his or her own. Again, tons of bugs with this version and I hope to see they can squash them out for the final release. Seems be a decent browser; minus the excessive memory useage I experienced.
Mamoun
The concept of having Trident ready to go is alright, but I can just use IE Tab for Chrome to get the same experience. Actually the developers are aiming to something much more advanced; they are trying to make the engine switching is as seamless as possible by synchronizing some engine-based files as cookies between both of them and making an automatic switch whenever an incompatible site is visited. The feature just can't be seen in its full glory yet in the beta. Agree on the buggy-ness of the release though, the excessive memory usage is especially annoying. Hopefully the release will continue to improve.
Growled Member Posted April 25, 2010 Member Share Posted April 25, 2010 I can see using Maxthon to make IE a bit better but I see no need to use Maxthon to make Webkit a bit better. The major Webkit based browsers all do a decent job now.
NienorGT
If someone would have shown me that picture without telling it's Maxthon, I would have it was FX 4.0 with a Chrome skin... =/

That blog post of yours is from 2005. The company has evolved since then. But if MaxthonGuy does not represent Maxthon, they should force him to close down his blog. And I'm sure Bill Gates is a nice person too, but he is a ruthless businessman. It seems to me that even though Jeff Chen might be a great guy, he definitely wants to grab some of that precious market share. Right now, Maxthon's official blogs seem to be a rather disgusting pile of FUD and dishonesty. They need to clean up their act.
