Tikimotel
As a long time PS3 (PS3 FAT with card slots) owner I would like to share this information with everyone ;) When inserting a media device into your PS3 you'll notice that not all media is detected right away on your device. (use triangle a lot, to view all/ show all) PS3 looks for folders first, the media must also be formatted with FAT32 (4GB file limit). Media device: (root) ├PS3 │ └UPDATE │ (put update file in here "PS3UPDAT.PUP") │ ├VIDEO │ (put media in here: *.MP4; remember the 4GB file limit because of FAT32) │ ├MUSIC │ ├<folder with album> │ ├<..... *.mp3 > │ ├<..... *.wma > │ ├<..... > │ └<folder with album> │ └DCIM (for jpegs .. broken? you can not manually create folders for viewing.) I hope this helps. (make things more easy) p.s. the folder names must be in capitals.
Livin in a box
It's a bit stupid TBH, I know it's for ease of use but having to put things in the correct folders is a bit annoying. It should auto-detect and have a manual search.

If you press triangle, an option will come up to show all files and folders and thus you'll be able to see your media files, where ever they're stored on your usb drive
