+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 28, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 28, 2010 Gran Turismo 5 3D support has been confirmed by Sony, and according to the titles US producer, implementing the technology was "a really tough job" for the programmers. In a video interview with GamerLive, Taku Imasaki stated: "Making a game into 3D means you have to divide the pictures into two and then process them seperately, so it was a lot of work for our programmers to make that happen, maintain the quality that Gran Turismo has been known for; beautiful and pushing the hardware limits, and still implementing the 3D aspect of it which is processing two pictures at the same time. That was a really tough job for our programmers, but our guys are brilliant and they're accomplishing it." Part of the epic racing series which first appeared in 1997/98 for the original PlayStation, Gran Turismo 5 is looking to take the genre to the next level with some of the most impressive, detailed models and a true driving experience. Surely the 3D tech can only make it better? The game launches later this year - with whispers of a June/July release running around - and is expected to carry the high reputation for previous instalments to the series. Alladaskill17
Didn't Sony state that 3D games would have to downgrade graphics a bit to smoothly run 3D? (maybe that was just for 1 specific title - read something here on Neowin). So is GT5 ignoring that and still trying to max it? I hardly pay attention to PS3 and gaming information, so my response really is a question, not sarcasm =)

I guess they'll talk about GT5 and 3D more at E3.

You have to do twice the FPS for 3D, so you either half the pre 3d frame rate to end up with the same 3d framerate, or reduce the quality so you get 120fps or whatever. Wait till it is used correctly. 3d is great when done right, and for gaming, where you will be close to the screen, you will be even more "in" the game. Good movies that have good 3d are awesome. A game that can do that, let you control though what you see, how you see, and where it is in the picture, will be amazing.

There is no better title to implement 3D on to try and push the technology in gaming. It's the highest single platform selling franchise around. The thing will be though how well have they implemented it.... head tracking is in as well, so 3D and head tracking and a logitech G27 could be a good mix. An expensive mix though

I just wish the 3d TV prices would drop already. To experience 3d correctly, you need a huge monitor, or else you are just limiting that experience. I have yet to see anything 3d in terms of "in the home", but I could only image a big screen working correctly. Something like a 32' would just be odd if you didn't sit in a way that it took up your whole field of vision.... Guess only time will tell. soniqstylz
From what I have read, there will be a 3D "version" of GT5. Probably all in the same version, just a new "mix" built from the ground up for 3D, instread of trying to retrofit it like they did the games mentioned in the "downgraded graphics" thread. Tho I'm sure the fact that it was in a semi-cubicle, with little to no surroundings to throw off field of vision made a difference.
Xerxes
Ugh. Please don't tell me they delayed GT5 so it could jump on the 3D bandwagon? Personally i have never understood the 3D obsession. 3D is awesome when done properly (been playing Avatar: The Game in 3D alot, the game sucks but I got it for free and it's awesome in 3D). However, that said it's really only a novelty. Obviously Sony is trying to use GT's influence to sell their soon to be released 3D HDTVs, be interesting to see how that plan pans out... The Teej
They just announced that due to the 3D optimization being applied to the game, the release date will be pushed another 10 years. And it's now coming out on the Playstation 5. Seriously, they teach you about these things in Uni, it's called Feature Creep. Perhaps they should keep an eye on this before it gets delayed even further lol.

Same. It's a horrible gimmick, not only do you have to be careful to make the action slower so everyone doesn't end up with motion sickness. Current hardware just can't cut it. Even a high spec PC struggles to get a stable 60 FPS! That's not even mentioning the heavy ugly glasses you're forced to wear and the huge costs of a 3D TV. It feels like the laser disc equivalent for 2010. :p
Pablo2008jedi
3D TV's Shows/Games in teh Home is a Fad and will never take on! :p well maybe never, but I certainly won't be sitting in my house with stupid glasses on! Even in the cinema I can suffer from eye strain while watching some 3D movies. I wonder if there is any long term eye problems associated with 3D
