Recommended Posts

The contract is “an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie’s next big action game universe to market”.

Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new IP on “multiple platforms and devices”.Bungie remains independent and will own the IP.“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, Bungie president.

“From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”

What were they smoking?

After everything that happened with IW they cant be arrogant enough to think they can manage Activision.

Heh, I was thinking the same thing. Why would someone sign up with Activision given the situation between them and IW at the moment? If I were a developer, I would be thinking twice before signing up with Activision, especially for a 10-year deal.

They are still independent, and they hold all the rights to their IPs. Smart move to lock up a publisher for 10 years, though I would have gone with EA instead...

Guys, I don't think that we are smarter than the folks at Bungie, and they're certainly more concerned about this than us. So stop complaining, there are certainly 1000 details about this story we don't even know about.

I don't really care what industry you are in, you better be pretty damn sure of yourself before signing a 10 year contract. Seems foolish to me, especially in wake of the whole Infinity Ward fiasco. Not sure why you wouldn't push for a shorter term and just renew it if things went smoothly. I mean, God knows where we will be in ten years.

Lets just hope Bungie don't actually care about their staff.

From the Joystiq article:

The deal also notes that Activision will have the rights to publish said games on "multiple platforms and devices,"...

So it looks like Bungie's new IP is going to exploited on a yearly basis, just like every other IP under Bobby Kotick's belt. If we assume one console game and one mobile game per year over ten years, that's twenty releases. That's a lot of money in Kotick's food budget.

The happiest man in the industry right now:

Why, Bungie? Why?

First Activision release to be on all platforms:

That said, you guys are all making one big mistake in your thinking: Infinity Ward was owned by Activision. Bungie is not. All of the IP that Infinity Ward created was owned by Activision when Activision bought out the remaining portion of the studio. So I'm going to say that, yes, Bungie will indeed still own their IP of whatever they create. This is more in line with the EA Partners program.

That said, I really wish they would've went to EA Partners, because I'm sure Activision will find some way to mess this up, even if not in the same way they messed Infinity Ward up.

Little bit different than the IW troubles.

Activision owned IW, they don't own Bungie. Looks to be just a publishing deal, something along the lines of what Respawn Entertainment and EA have.
