Corris Veteran Posted April 29, 2010 Veteran Share Posted April 29, 2010 Seems like a foolish deal to make, I could understand the power behind Activision, but in principle alone there could have been far better publishers. Just because IW were owned by Activision and wont own Bungie, doesn't mean Activision still can't screw over Bungie.

Crompee
What were they smoking? After everything that happened with IW they cant be arrogant enough to think they can manage Activision. They dont have to manage Activision. Activision only has publishing rights to this new IP (and nothing else), they do not own the studio nor do they own the IP.. If push comes to shove, Bungie could stop making sequals to the new IP and work on something else and there would be nothing Activision could do. All Bungie has done, is locked down a publishing deal for this new IP for the next ten years. "Bungie remains independent and will own the IP." Haha, yeah, that's what IW said too. Oh well, it was nice knowing you Bungie. Farewell~ IW was owned by Activision and Activision owned the rights to the IP. This is completly different, this is not a takeover but a simple exclusive publishing deal for a new IP. Is Bungie oblivious to what happened to Infinity Ward? :/ No they arnt, what happend to Infinity Ward is that they was owned by Activision, Bungie isnt doing anything of the sort. Its one IP with Bungie remaining in complete control regarding weither they make sequals, how long to make those sequals etc. All this is, is that anything to do with this IP that Bungie decide to make, Activision has the publishing rights for the next 10 years. I don't really care what industry you are in, you better be pretty damn sure of yourself before signing a 10 year contract. Seems foolish to me, especially in wake of the whole Infinity Ward fiasco. Not sure why you wouldn't push for a shorter term and just renew it if things went smoothly. I mean, God knows where we will be in ten years. Its one IP and its just a publishing contract. Bungie remains in control of what they do, ten years covers the major shelf life of most games or IP's, so all thats happend is Activisions has brought the publishing rights to a IP and all future games under that IP (for 10 years). It gives Bungie a cash injection to spend more time and effort developing the first game and it also gives them the confidence and security that they have a publishing deal locked in place already. From the Joystiq article: So it looks like Bungie's new IP is going to exploited on a yearly basis, just like every other IP under Bobby Kotick's belt. If we assume one console game and one mobile game per year over ten years, that's twenty releases. That's a lot of money in Kotick's food budget. The happiest man in the industry right now: Why, Bungie? Why? Why would Bungie exploit the IP on a year on year basis? Bungie arnt Activision and Activision arnt in control of this IP or Bungie. Any decision on this IP and the release/development schedule will be decided by Bungie, its just a publishing contract not a take-over. Seems like a foolish deal to make, I could understand the power behind Activision, but in principle alone there could have been far better publishers. Just because IW were owned by Activision and wont own Bungie, doesn't mean Activision still can't screw over Bungie. So, Activision doesnt own Bungie, Activision doesnt own the IP.. but they can still screw over Bungie with a simple publishing contract? how exactly, they cant demand anything from Bungie. Que more people jumping on the bandwagon and spouting random things about Bungie turning into the devil.

George P Global Moderator Posted April 29, 2010 Global Moderator Share Posted April 29, 2010 Wonder what this new IP will be. Besides, unlike with Halo, will they be doing just one game series for 10 years or w/e? I mean, maybe they're going to have a few new titles out, not just one. I still have to question why MS didn't just snatch up this sorta publishing deal. Go figure.

This is for a multi-platform game, which for MS means only PC/Xbox 360. Bungie obviously wanted to go beyond that or at least have option to port it to PS3. At Bungie's current rate of rougly 1 game every 3 years (not counting ODST), we are talking about ~3 games (trilogy?) or 5 if you consider the Activision factor. My dislike with Activision makes me wonder if it is more likely for Activision to implode by then - before they can screw over Bungie as such. Well that would depend if an all out fan base boycott is called. Bungie deserves much respect over the years though I'm sure the plans with Activision predate the IW debacle it doesn't sooth fan base investor relations one iota. I doubt a 10 year publishing deal is a simple contract though. Infinty Ward were also suppose to own the Modern Warfare IP and we've all see what an utter ****storm that turned in to. As I said on twitter I don't want to raise him in to some comedic Bond villan which people are doing at the moment. But the guy is clearly a manipulative prick who doesn't give a toss about developers he's all about min/maxing the profits at any cost. To get in to bed with him and think you're going to come out smelling of roses is nieve.

Slowly but surely we're going to become like the music industry, the artists, or in this case, the developers, are going to be shafted by the publishers. Activision already refusing to pay out dividends to IW from the success of MW2.

LingeringSoul
I may have gotten a little too excited/angry with my original post. Now that I've had a moment to cool off... I realize that Activision doesn't own Bungie the way that they own Infinity Ward. I just hope that it stays that way. Activision started off by purchasing a 30% share of Infinity Ward, and then they eventually ended up buying the other 70%. I have a nightmare scenario in my head where Bungie starts to lose money for whatever reason, and is subsequently "rescued" by Activision. Perhaps it's just a completely irrational fear on my part, but I don't like the fact that Bungie is dealing with Activision in the first place. We already know what they're capable of, and you need to be extremely careful when dealing with somebody like that. So Crompee is quite correct in stating that nothing is wrong at this present moment in time. I just hope it stays that way. And I do realize that I'm vilifying Bobby Kotick quite aggressively, but I think I'm justified in doing so, considering everything that he has "accomplished" as the CEO of Activision. I can say with 100% conviction that the gaming industry would be much better off without him in it.

Modern Warfare IP < Infinity Ward < Activision. In this case for Bungie its New IP < Bungie Activision does not own Bungie nor the IP, they are simply the exclusive publishers for it. Well, guess the name of the ex-bungie employees company. Inifinity Ward --> Respawn Bungie --> The forge? or, Bungie --> Bungie. Again, Acvitision does not own Bungie.. Why would the developers move and remake the company they own? Its a publishing contract not a takeover. I realize that Activision doesn't own Bungie the way that they own Infinity Ward. I just hope that it stays that way. Activision started off by purchasing a 30% share of Infinity Ward, and then they eventually ended up buying the other 70%. The problem with your irrational fear is, what do you want Bungie to do if they start to lose money and need bailing out? simply go bankrupt? Why would Activision be the bad guys for keeping the Bungie team alive? surely thats better than them not existing at all? especially if after the takeover and cash injection, Activision turns Bungie into a extremly profitable company.
