soniqstylz
Should we consider the fun that was the Vivendi / Valve publishing deal that ended up the Activision / Valve deal, and how that ended up? @ Crompee: I think it would follow differently than, say, Bungie's deal w/ Halo. IW could split from Activision, and take CoD with them.
soniqstylz
The problem with your irrational fear is, what do you want Bungie to do if they start to lose money and need bailing out? simply go bankrupt? Why would Activision be the bad guys for keeping the Bungie team alive? surely thats better than them not existing at all? especially if after the takeover and cash injection, Activision turns Bungie into a extremly profitable company. The makes just enough from a game or two to make their money back before closing them down.

I suppose you're right. In that situation, the best case scenario definitely involves a buyout, as opposed to dozens of brilliant developers ending up unemployed. I just wish Bungie had aligned themselves with somebody like EA instead. I realize that EA is hardly angelic either, but they're much better than Activision in my books. My god this topic is sad. it seems alot people invest in the various games industry politics like it's a soap opera. I didn't realize it was against the forum rules to express concern for a development studio that I respect. My mistake.

BajiRav
More details: http://kotaku.com/55...t=Google+Reader It won't be Marathon related (which is good IMO) While Activision is a powerful publisher, and while publishers often call the shots about how games are made, Bungie will retain a lot of decision-making power in this new deal. It will own the franchise, retain independence and even have say-so in how much the game costs — which will ideally avoid the grumblings from fans and Bungie last year about the pricing of Halo: ODST, a full-sized price for what many felt to be a slender game. Kudos to Bungie if true :)

HawkMan
I may have gotten a little too excited/angry with my original post. Now that I've had a moment to cool off... I realize that Activision doesn't own Bungie the way that they own Infinity Ward. I just hope that it stays that way. Activision started off by purchasing a 30% share of Infinity Ward, and then they eventually ended up buying the other 70%. I have a nightmare scenario in my head where Bungie starts to lose money for whatever reason, and is subsequently "rescued" by Activision. Perhaps it's just a completely irrational fear on my part, but I don't like the fact that Bungie is dealing with Activision in the first place. We already know what they're capable of, and you need to be extremely careful when dealing with somebody like that. So Crompee is quite correct in stating that nothing is wrong at this present moment in time. I just hope it stays that way. And I do realize that I'm vilifying Bobby Kotick quite aggressively, but I think I'm justified in doing so, considering everything that he has "accomplished" as the CEO of Activision. I can say with 100% conviction that the gaming industry would be much better off without him in it. MS already own a significan't minority share of Bungie. which practically mean just under the majority, which Bungie has themselves in order to maintain independent control. So they're not going to be selling anything, if they do, MS ends up with the majority. and if they ever where int rouble, MS would just buy them back and make whatever possible multiplatform IP exclusive. FYI. I don't know what Kotaku is smoking, but in their usual brilliant journalism, their title that the next Bungie game "will be on all platforms" doesn't match what the Bungie/Activision people say and what the article says. as it is, it only says Activision has the option to release the IP on multiple platforms, not even that Bugnie has to develop the other platforms. So Activison would potentially have to get someone else to port it.

+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 29, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 29, 2010 Bungie unfazed by PS3 'challenge'Arguably the biggest aspect to Bungie's deal with Activision today isn't that the Halo-creator has signed with the publisher embroiled in an ugly legal spat over treatment of its studios. No, it's the fact that the once Xbox-exclusive studio has changed focus to a new IP that will be released on multiple formats. For the past 10 years Bungie has worked solely on Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360 platforms - so the switch to multiplatform could present some issues. We put the question to the studio's community manager Brian Jarrard - will it not be a challenge moving to platforms like PS3? "Oh, sure - we've been Xbox exclusive for a long time," he said. However he confidently added: "But it's something where we have some of the best engineering folks in the industry on board who are already thinking heard about how our new game universe might manifest itself over various devices." And if Bungie's world-class team of coders can't quite make it, Jarrard said the new publishing deal with Activision gives the studio access to many who know multiplatform development well. Said Jarrard: "That was another big draw to Activision - they have a lot of experience with multiple platforms and technical expertise. I think we'll be able to work with them to leverage their experience and make that a little bit easier for us going forward." spenser.d
You guys are overreacting. No, I'm not pleased with Activision's treatment of IW, but this is entirely different. The mess with IW arose because IW wasn't a wholly independent studio from Activision and Activision owns their IPs. That's not the story with Bungie. I'm sure after going through everything they went through with MS and talking with Activision for 9 months, they have control of the situation. And I'm sure they're acutely aware of the situation between Activision and IW. Hell, they probably have more inside information on it than we do. Whether you like it or not, it's a smart move for them. On a different note, I'm very much looking forward to what Bungie comes up with next. -Spenser

Would be slightly easier to digest if it were a one off for this one IP.
coresx
Activision will screw them. They call the shots once the game is near completion as the IP can only be published through them. They could say to Bungie on the verge of release, our way or the high way and Bungie would likely have to cave or not get paid. It should be fun to see a new IP from Bungie though. There has to be somewhere in there that gives Bungie the ability to offer up their game to new publishers if Activision says no. And even so, why in god's name would they **** of Bungie? They have friends in really high places.
maash
from the looks of it: 1. Bungie signed on with Activision independently 2. Activision will not own the IP or Bungie itself during these 10 years 3. Bungie has signed on for only 1 NEW ip in a new universe which is NOT halo as that universe is owned by Microsoft 4. Bungie is allowed to create other games and work on other IP's with other publishers 5. Most of bungie interviews lead to the fact that this is an MMO Project 6. Looks to be a first person shooter MMO on multiple platforms (aka PC, Xbox 360 and PS3)
Tharp Daddy
God just think if the hardware could support it, and Microsoft and Sony could work together and bring the newest IP multiplayer multi-platform. It would truly unite the Bungie fanbase across multiple consoles.
