daliam
I am looking at purchasing a firewall to protect a network of 8 PCs. 1 PC in the office has the outgoing internet connection which is shared to the others. Not entirely sure how these work, presumably they sit between the computer and the phone line? Correct?? What do I need to look for?? What exactly do they do?? How exactly do they work?? http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/in...price&order=ASC I had a look here on ebuyer - which one would you go for?? g33kb0y
Hardware firewalls are expensive. Since you're going to be securing 8 computers, I don't know if that's an economical solution for you. But, hey, if you're protecting some pretty sensitive information, I'm sure it's worth it. ;) Anyway, you can learn a little bit more about hardware firewalls, here: http://communication-equipment.globalspec....twork_Firewalls and here: http://www.advanced-network-security.com/f...rewall_page.htm If you want another solution, you can also purchase a router. It creates a firewall that's typically better than software controlled firewalls, and is usually more configurable. A good broadband router can set you back about $80 - 100. Otherwise, if you're just trying to economically keep people out of your systems, a software firewall is a good solution. By the way...if you are curious how much hardware firewall and VPN solutions cost, check it out here: http://www.nextag.com/serv/main/buyer/outp...ware%20firewall
Roger H. Veteran Posted July 3, 2003 Veteran Share Posted July 3, 2003 just get a router instead of buying that. A router would connected and share intenet (buy another hub too.. hubs are cheap and they'll pass the network connections off to the router) And you wont have to keep 1 PC on all the time so the rest can get access. daliam
Right, I only have 1 PC connected. It's only a 56K dialup connection. We have Credit Card information on over 200,000 people so it needs protecting really. We've tried a software firewall but it seems to stop network traffic - see my other post in this forum. Liam Dialup to 8 Users? Your firewall is A. Change of IP Address Each Time it dials. 2. The usage of Private IP's to the shared machines. the only thing that needs a firewall is the machine with the 56K Modem :D There is no corperate firewall out there like a Cisco PIX to do a dialup connection.
