+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted April 30, 2010 Subscriber² Share Posted April 30, 2010 In an interview with Japanese show "Love Cars!", Yamauchi hinted at updates to GT5's damage modeling: "In GT5, NASCAR cars will able to smash into little pieces – some the size of a bolt." This sounds like a significant progression from what we've seen on the WRC cars so far, and it actually isn't the first time he has mentioned a more violent damage model. He also states he will be able to reveal the release date of the game "soon" (presumably at E3 in June). The problem is that this interview is on video, so we can't rely on bungled Google translations to see if there's any other tidbits that we might be missing. You can see the full unedited clip right here, so if you speak Japanese, please check it out and let me know if you hear anything else of interest. Thanks to Denur for the tip, and Famine for the clarified translation above! HawkMan
Sounds like the damage model on that ancient Viper racing game. not so much a "damage model" as simply having the car model deform every time it hits something or is hit, of course it can be deformed pretty much forever,so eventually it's just a tiny messy sphere of deformed polygons. +Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2010 Author Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2010 It'll be funny if everytime you crash the NASCAR it just explodes... Kaz has already spoke about realistic damage simulation basically meaning 1 hit and you're out, will be interesting to see if they add that as an option in the game. No more smacking into walls at 70mph and just coming away with paint dents and a slightly slower engine. We already know individual parts will come off the cars, so I don't think it's a big leap to suggest such an option may be added for the serious racers. “The damage physics are going to be applied to things like a bent suspension arm, tires hitting the wheel wells of a car, deformation of the body affecting alignment, the loss of power to the engine. We’re still working on setting the sensitivity level of of the damage. You can have it so if you have a single hit your car isn’t going to be able to be driven anymore. It’s a matter of adjustment.”

AbandonedTrolley
Can't wait for this baby to be released (Y) Sadly you have to, like the rest of us :p Whilst there are those that will be saying it can never live up to the hype/delays I have a feeling this is going to be one of the most 'complete' racers we've seen and are likely to see in a VERY long time. Sethos
Sadly you have to, like the rest of us :p Nah-uh, I'm special! Whilst there are those that will be saying it can never live up to the hype/delays I have a feeling this is going to be one of the most 'complete' racers we've seen and are likely to see in a VERY long time. Agreed, when we finally have this baby in our hands I'm sure it'll be a quality product all the way through. I do hope however, they keep that 'slow progression' style from the previous games. That's why I lost interest in Forza, you just get everything handed to you on a silver platter, it's super easy and the entire game reeks of being casual friendly. That's what I always loved about the GT serious - It can be extremely testing, you end up going through the same race / league / event a fair few times to save up for that special car, that'll give you an advantage in the next series of races; I love that. Still remember in GT2 or 3 where I ran those Sunday Club races SO many times, just to get a Mustang which give me a massive advantage in the lower leagues - Loved it and it took days, even weeks before I ever saw a real sports car and then you really feel proud, feel like you accomplished something when you finally get 'em ... Exactly the prices of some cars really meant that you had to work for them, some might call that boring, but as you say, it was an achievement. Things like the Polphony F1 cars cost insane amounts, but it was something to aim for, even if it took you months to get there.
+Audioboxer Subscriber² Posted May 1, 2010 Author Subscriber² Share Posted May 1, 2010 Does it has a bit where you can dramatically fly through the windscreen? Due to the length of time it's been in development I expect paramedics/choppers and ambulances. But as I said earlier I really do wonder what happens to drivers. I hope Nascar doesn't run without them (you can see them in all the trailers so far), and there's been rumours real world drivers will feature in GT5. I can only assume just now the car can be totalled everywhere except the cockpit shell to some degree, which is reinforced with a cage in real life. Oh and for anyone interested the new edition of First Play says every track will be able to be run in the dark, aka at night.

Hedon
Update: UPDATE: Although we are still waiting for a trusted source to confirm the complete contents of this interview, some have cast doubt regarding the reliability of Yamauchi?s quote above. Until we have confirmation otherwise, it?s best to assume this was never actually said.
