presence06
Jack Action writes "The University of British Columbia runs a summer camp where kids get to play computer games for three hours a day. The camp organizers say it is 'a good social opportunity for some kids who didn't fit into other programs.' However, health professionals declare they are 'troubled' by the camp. A professor in UBC's department of medicine says kids should be outside and engaged in 'unstructured play,' while the CEO of an NGO that monitors kids' health chimes in that they already spend too much time in front of screens and not exercising. Do the health experts have a point, or are they just criticizing something they don't understand, or perhaps is not to their taste?" It's a camp for kids to play video games. How is that bad? It's not like they're shoveling food into their mouths while they play. SlashDot

Cold Blood
So cool , wish I could go there myself  . Why are they criticizing it so badly ;) ? I know a lot of people, especially kids, that are better of standing in front of the computer then doing anything else. And there are far worst things to do than sit 3 hours a day in front of the computer :pinch: .

the evn show
3 hours out of 12 (assuming 9 spent sleeping and 3 spent eating & bathing) isn't the end of the world. I wonder if these people are equally opposed to "reading camp" or "painting camp"? Are piano lessons a major concern? Do they find school to be 'troubling' because it's 6-8 hours a day of sitting in a desk?

killmaster84
you spend 3 hours a day eating and bathing? dang. Sometimes the battle against the inner demon can last a while. Better hope god blesses you with a fan. Or you eat some fiber.

carmatic
maybe this camp can get some cred amongst these experts if they included some simple physical training or something kind of like how the army trains the soldiers, going through routines on a simulator before carrying them out physically
NikkiRox
experts are idiots. it'd only be 3 hours? I spent 8 hours a day at work in front a computer? what's a big deal? I'd love to go to that camp, though, I'd rather more hours game play :D
User6060
i think the big deal here that everyone is missing is that we're dealing with children who should be active at a camp going age....but if its teens then screw em they're old enough to decided to be lazy and waste summer
SuperJediMedia
What are they doing for the other 13 hours? That's the main question (8 hours deducted for Sleep) Though I don't see video game for 3 hours is that bad, they need to have sports/exercises as well. Talk to girls also helps. Just not playing games and that's it besides sleep/eat/watch TV. A LOT Kids these days are way too Indoor type, don't do outdoor activities much, and that's gonna ruin a lot of things for their future sakes.
