First Gran Turismo?5 test-drives featuring the new SLS AMG to take place across dealership network

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) and Mercedes-Benz are offering consumers the chance to test-drive the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG ? virtually ? via Gran Turismo?5 for PlayStation?3 (PS3?). Gran Turismo? is the world's best selling driving simulation game, acclaimed by motoring aficionados for its ability to give a taste of the real thing, driving the finest cars in the world on some of the world's most challenging tracks. Starting in May 2010 customers can visit their local Mercedes-Benz dealership for an exclusive taster of the forthcoming title ? a one-track demo featuring the new model at a specially-installed PS3 unit. The sampling activity marks a new stage in the partnership between developers Polyphony Digital and Mercedes-Benz that has already seen the SLS AMG picked to star on the game's cover when the title arrives in stores this year.

"This activity with Mercedes is one element of the close partnership we've forged with them while developing Gran Turismo 5," says Kazunori Yamauchi, President at Polyphony Digital. "The Gran Turismo franchise has always been about working hand-in-hand with the biggest and best marques in the motoring industry to create an unparalleled level of realism and the digital drive of a lifetime. Taking GT5 into dealerships is the next step in the marriage of virtual experience and real driving."

"We've worked very closely with PlayStation and Polyphony Digital to recreate the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5 ? and we're thrilled by the result," says Anders Sundt Jensen, Vice President Brand Communications Mercedes-Benz Cars. "From the gullwing doors to the sporty, cockpit-like interior with its performance steering wheel ? the car could barely look and feel more realistic. We're delighted to have this digital version of the SLS AMG next to its real-life counterpart in our dealerships ? it will give many thousands of people the chance to have the drive of a lifetime."

Consumers who head for their local dealerships will get to play a special, one-track demo, featuring the SLS AMG on the iconic N?rburgring, with both car and track recreated from real-life, down to the finest detail, with state-of-the-art mapping and image capture techniques. And, while they're there, they'll get to check out the real-life SLS AMG in all its glory.

Five-time DTM Champion Bernd Schneider also has driven the SLS AMG in Gran Turismo 5 and tested the performance and reality of the simulation.

It was he who accompanied the Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi during thorough tests on the N?rburgring Nordschleife."

The culmination of ten years of developing ultra-realistic driving experiences, hand-in-hand with the motor racing industry, Gran Turismo 5 will let gamers prove themselves on the world's most famous racetracks, behind the wheels of more than 950 cars. Arriving later this year, it's set to be the drive of a lifetime.

I hope there is a demo for this game when it gets close to release, I loved GT4 on PS2, and racing games IMHO are the best games to play with a console controller (pressure-sensitive buttons and joysticks make FPS games somewhat annoying, but work really well for fine-control games like racing and flying). Might actually buy it though if it seems to be popular when it finally releases, if it keeps me entertained half as much as GT4, it will be well worth its price.

Seems the car models are improving with every screenshot release. These are like digital orgasms. And hooray for them finally putting in a proper amount of tire marks on the track. Rumble strips look HAWT too. Not only are they worn and dirty, but they have tire marks criss crossing on them too.

Bet Merc/AMG loved that.

Yeah Kaz/PD/GT seems to be splooging over that car.

I don't like it that much, but if it drives nice in-game fair enough I guess....

If you think F3 feels arcadey, try GT5p or GT5 Academy. Those feel even more so. I hope we get a much improved GT5 release. However, if you want true Sims, you will need to race on PC, as that is where they are at (or you can get RacePro 2009 from Simbin for the 360 if you don't have a PC).

Exactly!

This is what i am expecting to see.A much better and more realistic handling.

They did a good job on the graphics apparently but there is more than that.Personally i believe the "Real Driving Simulator" that used to follow some of the Gt titles is unjustified. At GT4 for example handling is nowhere near to real car handling.I am not saying that its difficult.I am saying that is very unrealistic and especially the way that cars slide on dirt tracks no matter how fast or slow you are going. It feels like the walls have magnets, no traction at the wheels at all and what ever you do your car is going to hit the walls sideways.

It is a shame for GT5 to come out and still have such handling because it is the game that has real world tracks with very high accuracy even on details. A game like that must be close to real in every aspect and handling is the most important of them all in that kind of games.

Lets wait and see.

You Won't Believe How Much Detail GT5 Has

Oh, no. You really won't. Well, maybe you will. Dunno!

Earlier this month, Kotaku posted screens of the racing simulator from the N?rburgring tracks. Those screens look detailed, but Japanese site doooooooope! points out just how detailed. Look at the reflection in the car's side mirror.

Amazing. But is it done yet? Eh...

Gotta love having an extra year of dev. time. Props to Sony for saving this for Holiday 2010. PD has added A LOT of neat features (dirt/dust, better textures, etc.).
