Is The PSP Go Dead Yet?

500x_pspgo.jpg

This is the last picture I took of my PSP Go before selling it on eBay for $200. Is anyone still holding onto theirs?

Three months after Sony released the UMD-less, sliding screen PSP Go I finally caved and bought one of my very own. Why? For one, it is a very pretty device. It's gorgeous, really, all compact and sleek and slide-able. The other reason was I figured it was easier for publishers to send me reviewable titles via a PlayStation Network code than UMD disc, so it wouldn't matter that I couldn't use them.

Cut to four months later, and I've received at least three or four preview builds for upcoming PSP titles on UMD. My favorite games from the PSP's past aren't available for purchase, and I still have a drawer nearly filled with UMD titles I can't play.

It's still extremely pretty, but the PSP Go is nearly useless to me.

It's not like Sony is supporting the device either. Every new PSP game ad focuses on the PSP-3000 model of the system. One of the biggest PSP games of the system's history, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, is coming out soon, with a limited-edition PSP-3000 bundle and nothing for the PSP Go whatsoever.

Everyone knows the system has failed. I know. Sony knows. Hell, even GameStop knows.

The video game retailer will still sell you a new PSP Go for $250, but when I checked to see how much I could get towards a PSP-3000 by trading the more expensive system in, I was shocked to learn that the PSP Go is only worth $50 to GameStop.

Which led me to eBay. The PSP Go still sells relatively well on the auction site, perhaps due to the preponderance of impulse buyers cruising the categories for a good deal. I set the "buy it now" price to $200, posted my auction, and the next morning I had $200 in my PayPal account and a trip to the post office to make.

So at least one market for the PSP Go is still strong. Though I can't help but wonder when my system's new owner will realize that the system he's purchased is exactly the same as the PSP-3000, only it slides, can't accept UMD drives, and has a slightly larger memory capacity than the older model with a 16GB Memory Stick Pro.

It's been said before, and I'll say it again: the PSP Go is no better than a broken PSP-3000 with a fresh new look.

So mine is gone now, the new owner seems pleased, and next weekend I'm picking up a new PSP-3000, hopefully one of those pretty lilac if I can find an extra Hannah Montana bundle lurking about Walmart. Sure, it's packaged with a Hannah Montana movie and video game, but hey, at least the system will be able to play them.

Are there any PSP Go faithful still among us?

The PSP Go was dead before it launched.

Still got my PSP 1000 with custom firmware, I used to think it was amazing... however it hardly gets any use these days.

With mobile phones becoming much more powerful than the PSP I think the phone will soon be my mobile gaming platform of choice.

Took the words right out of my mouth (Y) But I still think phones have a long way to go before they are par with DS/PSP game quality.

PSP Go, Dead? I don't think so.

You do know that the Go was never meant to replace the existing line of PSPs, don't you?

The PSP Go was only meant to provide another option for looking to buy a PSP.

Whether you buy a Go or a 3000, it's just another PSP sale as far as Sony's concerned.

Love both my Go! and 1000

You ever tried putting a PSP-1000 in your pocket? PSP Go! is so much lighter, and I can get more movies onto it without buying additional memory.

Really? So you think Sony's OK with having spent all the money they did on the redesign of the PSP, which was being hailed as the next PSP on even these forums before it came out, and they'd be happy with sales where, to quote last months Japanese numbers, the older PSP sells 28,758 units and the PSP Go sells 1,544 units (less than *gasp* the 360)?

The whole "it's just an additional PSP" sound like retconning to me...

Can you CFW on PSP-3000?

I could've got a brand new one for under $80 bucks and decided not to because I thought you still couldn't put a CFW on them.

some models you can, and the ones you can use a method where you can't turn your psp off/reset it because if you do you gotta re-hack... If you can find a 2000 you are pretty much golden. I love my CFW 2000.

How could it be dead if it was never living. Thing was DOA on arrival.

Double redundancy!

The PSP as a whole (3000 included) is pretty much dead.

There hasn't been a worthwhile game released on it since GTA Vice City Stories back in 2007. Shame really, it had the potential to be huge.

Dark Alex hasn't even done anything big for it like he used to, It was once a huge thing to have a PSP + his custom firmware. Now all my friends have sold their PSP's and moved on, most (myself included) just gaming on the iPhone.

not really, their have a been a crapload of AAA games released for the psp since then. FFVII Crisis Core, God of War (and another GoW is coming out for PSP), Gran Turismo (still addicted to that game, like pokemon, gotta catch them all (the cars) ), Little Big Planet, GTA Chinatown wars etc etc. Their are a TON of good games out there, not to mention if it's modded you have a crapload of emulators you can throw on the thing.

Never gave buying a PSP Go a second thought, still rocking my 2000 slim with 5.50 Gen-D3

(Y) me too

Well, on my PSP Go! I have:

SOCOM 3

Monopoly

Bomberman Land

C&C Retaliation

C&C Red Alert

Command and Conquer

Theme Hospital

GTA: Vice City Stories (also have it on UMD)

Fieldrunners

Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe

Assassins Creed: Bloodlines*

LittleBigPlanet

Gran Turismo*

GTA Chinatown Wars

Sega Mega Drive Collection

Echochrome

Tetris

Killzone Liberation*

Resistance Retribution*

Syphon Filter: Logans Shadow*

*Games I got free

I also managed to snag ?40 in vouchers from GAME due to the sharp price drop after release. so...

?230 release price

minus ?40 vouchers and free games the end "price" hasn't been too bad.

I prefer it vastly over my 1000 primarily because of weight, but the screen is not only slightly smaller but is sharper and brighter. PSP-1000 looks very "soft" in comparison. At any time I tend to have about 6-8GB of games on it, which leaves loads of room for movies, making it far better for traveling with.

Personally I found it a worthwhile purchase, and anyone who tells me otherwise can STFU.

You're like the only person I know that bought one  But then again you're obviously someone who doesn't mind buying games... Always found the hardware attractive as the old PSP is a brick, but price put me off. It would sell more if you could pirate on it, no gamer who pirates is going to touch it, even if it becomes much cheaper.

To you it isn't, remember your opinion is just that, an opinion.

It was a joke. I read the last line of the post I quoted.

I was going to get a PSP 3000 for Peace Walker but after seeing the size difference in person I will probably end up getting a PSPgo - it is much more comfortable to play on for me, the 16GB internal memory and the ability to use a Dualshock 3 controller are also a big selling point for me. I will probably use it more for an mp3 player in my car than a gaming device, I don't see myself buying many games outside of Peace Walker and Gran Turismo. The lack of a UMD drive is a drawback only because not every game is available on PSN and you will generally have to pay higher prices especially considering used UMDs, but outside of that I think the PSPgo is superior in every way.

The only other think I am considering is a PSP2000 from ebay for custom firmware purposes, custom firmware is the only reason I wouldn't get a PSPgo.

I find gaming on the iPhone pretty poor (but I know I'm the minority). I hate the emulated dpads etc. I don't mind games that actually use the touch screen but "ported" games are just hard to control
