Need opinions on hosting a blog....

Question

Hello,

I wish to start a blog. It'll be about movies, books and other forms of media... mainly for my college application but also because I do have free time right now and want to put it to good use.

First of all, I have heard that WordPress is the best.. so I am preferring that. But if anyone of you wishes to recommend some other service, then please do so.

Also, regarding WordPress.. I wanted to ask, should I host my site on WP.com or should I register my own domain and get hosting? How much difference is there?

First of all, regarding cost. I have asked around some of my friends who deal in this, and they have informed me that I can get my domain + reliable hosting in around $25-$30. I find that quite reasonable for my use (personal, non-commercial)

Also, the major point - how much time will the maintenance and upkeep take if I host it myself? I've heard from people that this will be the sore thumb and will cause me lots of trouble and might take time away from the writing. Is it true? How much time will it take to manage a site that contains just a WordPress blog? And how much time will it take to setup, install themes.. plugins etc.?

Please do help me out here. I am sure most of you will be very knowledgeable in all this.... and I could do with your guidance.

If you want to be able to customize your site to your own likings with plugins, your own theme, widgets, etc... Then you want to go the route of purchasing a domain name ($9-10 avg) and hosting ($5/mo avg).

Wordpress.com will not allow you to utilize widgets, plugins or theme customization (CSS only) unless you pay for the premium account.

As far as maintenance, you're coming into Wordpress with its latest features--automatic upgrade. You can easily do one-click upgrades when new versions are out. So it's not going to give you a sore thumb and truthfully, before this was added upgrading wasn't even that much of a process before.. Just upload the new files and you're good to go.

How much time it takes depends on how far you need to go with customizing your website. If you need something bare bones, then very little time. If you need something highly customized, then more time.

I don't have a blog but for my websites i use http://webhostingbuzz.com and they are amazing! They have never gone down. I have the old Bronze Plan for $36 a year but that doesn't exist anymore. I know there are hosters that offer unlimited bandwidth, but I doubt that's true.

Squarespace is quite good. Hosting and Blogging platform, nice Interface to manage your blog and allows a lot of customisation. Although it's definitely a lot more than $30 a year.

Wordpress is at the point where maintaining it is usually a piece of cake. I logged onto my Wordpress install this morning and upgraded 6 plugins and the Wordpress core with a couple of clicks, I highly recommend it.
