Sonic Xtreme

Recommended Posts

This project was canceled in favor of Sonic 3D Blast. It incurred several delays as it was intended for the Genesis then development shifted over to the Saturn to have a Sonic game compete with Crash Bandicoot on the Sony Playstation and Mario on the Ultra 64

There was a previous concept before Sonic Xtreme was carried on; this project was based on the hit show SatAM

Reminds me of Prince

Overall some very amazing concepts. These programmers and artists had some deep imaginations. I wish we could see some of that in todays market of games

I honestly believe that this game having not been released is what killed the Saturn in North America.

I could see myself getting dizzy from playing the game in the first video, but I'd still play it. The second one looked too slow paced for a Sonic game.

Sega could write the book on how to NOT do 3D.

Actually Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are great Sonic 3D games... no idea how they went so downhill to be honest.

Actually the level design in the first video was pretty amazing! Not too sure about the mechanics but the imagination was there (Y)

They could also write a book on how to create an awesome gaming franchise, then totally missunderstand what people want of it.

that ultra widescreen look would have only made sense when you had an actual widescreen to play it on, as in something which wraps around your vision so everything looks straight again...

i kind of agree with the idea of doing that field of view to give a greater impression of speed, but back when this game was released, the only setups like this was in professional simulator rooms and stuff, and theres no way the resolution of the genesis or saturn could have looked even tolerable on those screens

the game had many cool ideas, but some of them like having a seperate game engine for boss fights etc sound abit strange today

It's a function of the platforms they were on.

what do you mean 'a function of the platforms' ? isnt the function simply to play games? like you can have good games and bad games, and the sonic games just happened to be bad....

I feel like Nintendo took this concept and put it in Mario Galaxy

Not that I have beef with that but at least somebody noticed.

Doesn't really remind me of Mario Galaxy TBH. If anything it looks like some of the more vertical levels in Mario 64 with a rather over the top filtering effect over the top of everything. Besides, when all is said and done Galaxy wasn't that big a change on the 3D Mario formula.

It also would be a nightmare to play IMHO.

It definitely reminds me of Mario Galaxy, except for the obvious gravity concept. I think a game like this could do well, but would require the game to be a bit more zoomed out and less curved by going a little more easy on the "fish-eye" effect

It's exactly what has been wrong with Sonic even this generation. Too much platforming that loses sight of what made Sonic, Sonic....speed.

Also, without an analog controller to control the speed of Sonic, that first concept would be hard to pull off in multiple levels without the user getting frustrated. There were so many points where the person almost fell off the map.

I noticed that myself. Truth be told Sonic was by design to be the ultimate 2D platformer. Here's my take on this, I wouldn't mind 3D Sonic games but make them few in the batch of 2D ones, OR even better like they did with Sonic 2, and 3, implement 3D inspired special and bonus stages, it makes gameplay less repetitive and adds a broad atmosphere to the game.

Unfortunately very, very true.
