Denis W. Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2010 Who is the youngest staff :D 19 here, I have a feeling Mike Brown is the youngest. Joshua Seed is 15. Wrong. Colin-uk is 12, he said so :p (in all seriousness, Mike is right. Josh is the youngest) I always wondered what Neobond and other staff members do apart from handling Neowin, like for a living. In school, studying computer science at the University of Toronto. Planning to do a specialist in software engineering. As for employment... nothing yet this summer. :/
bruNo_ Share Posted May 18, 2010 Don't know how many South American members Neowin has, but is there a possibility to do a Neowin Meeting like you guys do in England every year?

thugilex Share Posted May 18, 2010 can we have a thread or an Arabic section ?
PL_ Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2010 can we have a thread or an Arabic section ? Unlikely. We don't allow any languages other than English because of the headaches involved with moderating two languages. Using something like Google Translate isn't practical and phrases that aren't necessarily insulting before translating could be seen as insulting after translation (or vice versa). You'd have to prove that: There is a large enough group of Arabic speakers to justify a section A large enough group of people who can can speak both English and Arabic and are trustworthy enough to be moderators I also think that if we were to have other language sections, we'd have one of the much larger groups that we have right now, like French speakers. There might be other reasons against it, but that's all I can think of right now. Hope that helps :)
JMann Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2010 This may not be the best place to ask this, but have you considered creating a Qualifications forum? For example a place to discuss Microsoft Certifications (MCITP/MCTS/MCSE), Citrix CCNA etc? I wouldn't consider it a place for muiltiple sub forums, but just one forum to discuss all may be worthwhile. 1 Share

Fred Derf Veteran Share Posted May 18, 2010 Yes, if we had an Arabic section, an Italian section, a Russian section, a Japanese section, etc.. then not only would we need staffers fluent in those languages so we could implement the Community Rules but it would make staff transition a very difficult proposition. At any given time some of our moderators are busy or taking temporary breaks until their project is complete, their exam is written or their girlfriend allows them back into the house. With only one language we can cover for others quite nicely.

name in use Share Posted May 20, 2010 Question: Has there been a time where it was rough (see outages in the early 00's) where one of you thought 'Is this really worth it?' and almost closed up shop?
Fred Derf Veteran Share Posted May 20, 2010 Question: Has there been a time where it was rough (see outages in the early 00's) where one of you thought 'Is this really worth it?' and almost closed up shop? I assume that when our site was deleted after the takedown order then that would have been the easiest time to just pack it in.

Steven P. Author Founder Share Posted May 21, 2010 Question: Has there been a time where it was rough (see outages in the early 00's) where one of you thought 'Is this really worth it?' and almost closed up shop? Yeah mostly in the first years, after 2004 though we became pretty stable in terms of hosting and staff group, which made my life quite a bit easier :p Very true. Question: Have there been any 'buy out' offers to Neowin? Yes we've had a few strange offers over the years, some I've replied to and others I've ignored. But we've never wanted to waiver (full) ownership. Redmak and I still hold 60% ownership of the site.
