Deleted the Recycle Bin icon from desktop

Recommended Posts

Hi there.

When I installed XP, I was bothered by the Recycle Bin sitting on the desktop. I went to a tips site (don't remeber which one) which outlined a way to delete the icon *completely* through a regedit method.

Problem is, I want the icon back since C:Recycled doesn't have the full functionality as the Bin in the desktop. However, I do not remember what keys I originally deleted from the registry for the hack, and thus cannot 'reverse-engineer'.

If anyone knows the soloution to the problem, please post it here. :)

TweakUI can restore/remove the Recycle Bin to/from the desktop. If you don't have it, I recommend getting it. It is free and comes with Windows XP Powertoys:

Tweak UI wont work unfortunately :(

Thanks for the tip but it doesn't seem to be working.

I go into Notepad and save it as a REG file. Then I proceed to right-clikc and select 'MERGE', but I get an error telling me to do it within regedit

So I go to regedit, and attempt to imprt the REG file. BUT, I still get an error saying it's not a valid binary file or something.

So can anyone lese help me out.

Give this a go:

  • Open "gpedit.msc" from the run box
  • Navigate to User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesDesktop[/b]
  • Right-click on the "Remove Recycle Bin icon from desktop" option and click Properties
  • Set it as Disabled, then click OK.

Have you tried the 'Repair' utility on your WindowsXP CD ?

That would restore any changes you have made to the system which are not supported by MS.
