PSP2 To Be Announced At E3, According To Publishers

500x_pspconcept.jpg

Word on the street is that Sony will be announcing a proper sequel to the PSP in just a couple of weeks at E3. That's right?we're not talking something slimmer, more slidy-outy, or colorful. A true PSP2. UPDATE

The rumors are emanating from within several gaming publishers, and with E3 just around the corner in June all shall be revealed as to how Sony plans to tackle Nintendo's 3DS, also due for announcement at the show. [MCV via Kotaku]

UPDATE: Sony's latest financial results show a desperate need for a new PSP. From 14.1million PSP sales in 2008, to 9.9million in 2009? Ouch. Especially considering the PSP Go launched last year.

IF the PSP2 looks anything like the concept in the pic above, I MAY get it if it also means higher quality games. The abiliity to run PS2 games on a portable system? Id buy it. Even the ability to run PS3 games on it, albeirt dumbed down versions, hells yea :)

My expectations are high, lets wait and see what Sony delivers :)

That concept pic was the same one that floated around before the PSPgo. It was just a fan made prototype so safe to say it won't look like that.

Definitely more interested in a PSP2 than anything the PSPgo introduced, IF they do better controls. That along with the port of games was the Achilles heal of the first PSP.

Maybe they'll add a touch screen :p

BTW, I've been hearing otherwise on it being shown at E3...I guess that doesn't stop them from announcing they are working on one though ;)

If it's good, and has a good selection of games, I might consider one. Considering the main game I want for Nintendo's handhelds in the future will be compatible with the DS Lite (Pok?mon B&W) then I may consider this.

Then again. I rarely touch games other than my PC and my DS, is it worth buying another handheld now, nevermind a games console?

Whatever they do, I really think they need to keep backwards compatibility with the UMD. That was the failure of the PSPgo. There just aren't enough games available on PSN. So many classics that never made the transition from UMD to digital download.

Maybe they'll ramp up putting games on PSN. I don't think they'll be sticking with UMD though. I've heard they'll be using some type of memory stick that connects to PSP.

Yeah, I like that one, looks good. No need for a phone in there though in my eyes. :/

And I don't see why 3D is so awesome, don't care for it personally.

Agreed, no need for the phone function, but it was all touchscreen so not a big deal.

I'm still predicting a PSP phone. As a resident Neowin PSP lover I'm already interested in the PSP2. PSP and PSPGo! have been devices that have been with me for the past 5 years and can't imagine portable gaming on anything else personally.

PSPhone would be awesome. Sony Ericsson isn't doing too well these days, so something like this might work really well to boost that arm of the company.

I'd love to see PS2 compatibility; if only to fill the hole left when it was removed from PS3.

My PSP1000 is battered and broken, but it still gets some play time. If the features and price are right, I'd definitely consider upgrading.

They would have to do some big improvements for me to consider getting one, because I know at the back of my mind that there is always a strong possibility that it becomes a device I play for a bit in the beginning, then it becomes a dust bunny for the rest of its life (much like my DS).

I hope this isn't Sony's big E3 announcement. PSP is a waste of E3 space. I hope they knock us out with some PS3 news.

HDMI output! Phones like the EVO 4G and devices like Zune HD have HDMI out, would love to see this on a gaming device.

Support for PSP and PS1 games is a must.

Indeed. I had a PSP for a few months before eventually selling it, and those two things were what ruined it for me. If they make a PSP2 (and I hope that this rumour is true), it needs to have dual analog nubs. I don't care if Sony thinks it's a bad idea. There are so many people who want two nubs, and this is one case where they simply must listen to their fans.

I'm definitely interested in the possibilities for the PSP2. I'm a DS owner, but my gut is telling me that I'm going to be disappointed by the 3DS even though we haven't seen anything from it yet. If Sony can deliver a powerful handheld (something that blows every smartphone out of the water) with good controls, some good original content and ports that don't suck, then my next handheld choice will be an easy one.

Honestly I think that this/next generation of handhelds will be the last. Soon will be the day that you no longer have a smart phone, but a pocket PC with game software running directly on that. Skype and other free calling services will rule portable devices. Either way, looking forward to what they have, especially as it may be the last of its kind.
