Almighty1
Greetings everyone, I'm running Windows XP Professional Build 2600. For some reason, I change the desktop icons or load a theme which does update the My Computer, My Network Places, My Documents, and Recycle Bin Desktop icons but upon rebooting, it loads the default 4 desktop icons for the Windows XP Theme once again. Anyone knows what I can do to fix this since deleting the iconcache.db file didn't do anything. Thanks.

aco Veteran Posted December 28, 2001 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2001 Try this ;) Open "gpedit.msc" from the run dialog box. Navigate to User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesDesktop Disable the "Don't save settings on exit" option.
Almighty1
Just tried that with gpedit.msc, it appears the Don't save settings on exit says Not configured so that can't be it. The weird thing is that under the four Class ID's for the Icons, before rebooting, it does show up correctly in HKEY_CURRENT_USER but upon rebooting, it goes back to what HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE has defined. aco Veteran Posted December 28, 2001 Veteran Share Posted December 28, 2001 Ok. :) Right click on the "Don't save settings on desktop" option and click Properties. Then choose "Disabled" and click OK.
Almighty1
Just tried that and no luck, same thing still happens. What I found out is that it does save the settings to HKEY_CURRENT_USER since I rebooted to safe mode to check the same HKEY_USER and all is well. It appears that Logging in is what wipes those 4 keys for the icons to blank which will use the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE defaults.
Almighty1
These are the 4 keys that seems to get wiped when I login again. ; My Computer [CLSID{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}DefaultIcon] DefaultValue=%ResourceDir%ThemesMacOSXIconsAqua.icl,11 ; My Documents [CLSID{450D8FBA-AD25-11D0-98A8-0800361B1103}DefaultIcon] DefaultValue=%ResourceDir%ThemesMacOSXIconsAqua.icl,23 ; My Network Places [CLSID{208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D}DefaultIcon] DefaultValue=%ResourceDir%ThemesMacOSXIconsAqua.icl,14 ; Recycle Bin [CLSID{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}DefaultIcon] full=%ResourceDir%ThemesMacOSXIconsAqua.icl,31 empty=%ResourceDir%ThemesMacOSXIconsAqua.icl,
Almighty1
Any ideas guys? It seems to only be a problem with one user login since new created accounts and Administrator don't have this problem.
Almighty1
^bump^ anyone? It seems like the problem is that it only affects my account but not newly created accounts or Administrator account. For some reason, the 4 keys that go under HKEY_CURRENT_USER are there but upon logoff and logging in again or simply rebooting, all 4 of the keys get deleted. This doesn't happen with any other accounts, anyone have any ideas what can be causing this? Thanks.
