Jimmy0
VG247 has learnt that Sony is to reveal plans for PSN?s premium services at E3.According to a highly-placed source, Sony will announce a large-scale monetizing scheme for PSN at the LA show, but we?re assured nothing planned will impact the service?s current free aspects. A string of features will be revealed, apparently costing ?less than ?50 per year?. Sony will confirm plans to give all subscribers one free PSN game per month, from a choice of ?two to four? every month. ?If you work it out, PSN games cost an average of ?6-9 each, so over a year you?re basically going to be breaking even,? said our source. A streaming music application similar to Spotify will be announced in Sony?s press conference on June 15. It?s thought that this can run in the background while playing games. Rumours that cross-game voice chat is being saved as a paid feature are apparently not true, we were told. ?I can tell you now, 100 percent, that that?s not the case,? our man continued. ?There?s nothing in the premium package which will gimp regular PSN users. ?The PSN premium services announcement is thought to be a major part of Sony?s E3 conference, which will also heavily feature Move. It?s thought that a PSP2 announcement, for this reason, is unlikely, and will be saved for either gamescom or TGS later this year. Get more detail on that here. Source: http://www.vg247.com/2010/05/17/premium-psn-plans-for-e3-reveal-to-cost-less-than-50-per-year/ Make of this what you will. They're are going to have to bundle some pretty amazing things to make me pay for the PSN.

0nyX
Hope this is not the big news that are going to be announced for PS3 owners.
.KICK
As long as I can play online without paying then I'll be happy. You will, Sony would be seriously retarded to make everyone suddenly pay to go online but then again they did remove the Other OS install option. I really do believe this is going to be just additional premium content, it is way to late for them to introduce payment for the same model that has up until this point been free. That would not fly at all, and they know it. Online MP will still be free, no doubt in my mind.
jelli
Interested to see what it is they will announce, hopefully it won't be too overpriced for what it is. If the free game a month is correct then I think I will definitely take them up on the offer.
KoL Veteran Posted May 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2010 A free PSN game per month would be nice but that includes PS1 games?
Neo003
The question comes to mind is that does Sony thinks people will pay ?50.00 just for 12 games and few extra themes and such. There are 40+ million PSN user (according to Sony), in that 40+ how many do you think would buy this subscription. There are few hardcore fans who would love to give money to Sony but average users (which in most case psn user are) will not see anything worth ?50.00. I do think Sony is taking a huge loss over PSN; they do need to make up for it somehow. But this strategy is little too much too late.
DrunknMunky Veteran Posted May 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2010 Was bound to happen one day, the free plan was never going to get them far. Edit: Lots of rumours flying around that Netflix will be included in this new Premium service too.
Xenomorph
This sounds good - if either the "free" PSN downloads include original PSX games - or those 360-exclusives suddenly showed up on the PSN. As of right now, *nothing* disc-based on the 360 attracts me, except for their exclusive downloadable games. That is what I want to play. I also have a stack of PSX games, so paying for them again on the PS3 just to get them installed is not something I want, but having them thrown in for "free" when I pay for other stuff would be nice. As long as I can play online without paying then I'll be happy. And this. Aside from EA Sports games, obviously. Personally I wouldn't have an issue with taking a gamble of paying ?50 a year for 12 games, certainly will be interesting to see what the plan would come with though. They've already said that this wouldn't take away anything that's already there for free so there is nothing to be lost from this for Sony really. People shouldn't suddenly be up in arms because this comes along and they don't want to pay. They aren't losing anything, it just seems Sony may be giving people a value for money option on PSN games.
DPyro
Here's the thing...what if there aren't any games you were interested for the month. Would these 'credits' carry over, or are they just gonna screw you over..

The price is bit on the higher side but lets say they give nice games/month for free. $70 a year is worth it considering they have some more feature with this. I would look at the benefit i get before i make a purchase. I am an average user too.

rajputwarrior
that's if all they are doing is giving away games every month. their could be a lot of cool extras, we'll have no idea until e3 though. but if i can still play online for free, chances are i won't care less about this. No need to pay for a premium services but I like that "free" games option if it's true. I'll pay if they have more good features.

If the free game a month is correct then I think I will definitely take them up on the offer. i would use the term 'free' loosely b/c youre essentially paying for the games. it's like 12 games a year for $50 and you only have 4-6 games to choose from each month. i guess we'll wait and see... c3ntury
Its good at least they still are not charging people for online play, that has been one of Xbox's biggest downsides, along with the RRoD and no built in wireless.

Fish
I'd happily pay ?50 a year for a streaming music and/or movie service (as long as the content is there). (Y) I'd consider free PSN games an added bonus.
00000
This sounds kind of cool, making it more of a retainer than a monthly fee, you're paying in advance for games and guaranteeing you'll buy one a month. The only problem is that with no promises as to what the games will be there is a lot of opportunity to get screwed. If the choice is always between the 2 to 4 crappiest games that month, or worse the games aren't even new that month its just a different set of choices so they start giving away games that most people already go free from previous deals like Flow, Rag Doll Fu, or High Velocity Bowling, or worse yet they give away some crappy Minis or other garbage that is created for the sole purpose of having games to put in the list of choices. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted May 17, 2010 Veteran Share Posted May 17, 2010 Um, it's already included. Doesn't mention anything in the news story about it, but I was talking about a solution which didn't rely on the disc.
