Why People Buy PS3s

Recommended Posts

Polling 700 people aged between 7-54, all of whom were in the market for a PS3, the company asked what it was exactly that was driving these people to purchase Sony's home console. Their responses show that anyone thinking Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted or Killzone had a big influence on console sales is crazy.

As you can see, the console's Blu-Ray drive, overall library of games and recent price cut all played the biggest part in convincing these consumers that the PS3 was right for them. Also important were things like upgrading from a PS2 (and with 150 million of them out there, there's a lot of people left to upgrade)and playing games with friends who own a PS3.

Something that wasn't playing an important role was a desire to purchase a single game, only 12% of respondents saying that even contributed to their decision, let alone serve as the key motivator. Those that did, though, cited God of War III as a must-have, with no other game - including Final Fantasy XIII - managing much of a mention.

I bought mine because of the games(GoW, GT, FF, R&C etc.), Blu-Ray and media capabilities.

I bought mine because it has EVERYTHING. BluRay, free online play, the best exclusives (Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, God of War III, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc), rechargable controllers, everything.

I bought mine for the capabilities, the exclusive titles and because I previously owned a Playstation and a Playstation 2.

For me, it was an easy decision. Simply cause of my pleasant past experiences with the psx and ps2. Only natural for me to get a ps3.

Got my phatty on launch. Never a problem with it till this day. It sure outlived my three 360 rrod's and a Wii. I handed it down to my cousin that was going away for college and grabbed a Slim.

Safe to say it'll be a no-brainer for me to upgrade to a ps4 whenever the time comes. Sony products have definitely stood the test of time for me. (still have my launch unit ps2 with dms3 chip too!)

I would say it was the Blu-Ray, the fact on Xbox you have to pay to play online, when on a PS3 you don't, and the very good graphic quality.

free online, integrated wifi unlike the xbox, bluray, lower failure rate than the xbox and good graphics made me choose ps3.

price cut and the slim version gave me a boost to buy it.

Initially I purchased mine for MGS:4 (and GT5, still waiting!!) but that wasn't the only reason. I also purchased mine after the BluRay vs HDDVD war, even though I didn't own a HDTV at the time, I knew I would be buying one soon.

It was more of a furutre proofing point for HD video. Of course other little things it does put it beyond the xbox, like inbuilt wifi, rechargable controllers, xbox failure rates.

Plus I previously own'd the PS and PS2, so was comfortable with the controller.

On a side note, I now have both consoles now anyway :)

I'd say the primary point of me getting the console was the games, with the media capabilities coming in second.

Although seeing as the article is in this section, it's pretty obvious most of the responses are going to be saying they got it mostly for the games.

I bought it, surprisingly, for the blu-ray playback and the games second. I only play a few games on my PS3: KZ2 (when it came out), both Uncharted games, and God of War 3. Now that I've finished those, there aren't any more exclusives that interest me. I buy all the multi-platform games for my 360, so no need to get them for the PS3. The blu-ray playback is more important to me at this point, as I've started to develop my blu-ray collection more and more now a days.

Exactly the same for me.

got mine on launch day way to early but to be prepared for MGS4 :D I still play on a tube tv unfortunately so blu-rays not much of a big deal for me being a 60GB being able to play ps2 games is handy too.

I'll be honest

I find these reasons quite disappointing but to each their own.

Disappointing? What would you prefer the reasons were for people paying for the Playstation?

Ultimately when you look at the Playstation and it's capabilities, there is going to be a different reason for everyone to buy it. For some it's the name, for others the game selection, and for some it was that it's a blu-ray player that does more than just play your blu-ray films.

For me it was the GoW series. Had that not been in ps3 I probably would still be waiting. As things are now the price reduction really wasnt enough but I really wanted to play GoW 3.

If I had no console now, I would more than likely go for the PS3, namely because of the fact you can get the official F1 games for it and Gran Turismo 5 which looks stunning. Also having the Blu Ray player would be a bonus.

I thought this was obvious? When Blu-ray was first released, Sony had the right idea about how to sell the PS3 using Blu-ray as the Trojan horse. And my only argument with this is that most companies that released a Blu-ray player on the market either had no abilities to be upgraded to the latest Blu-ray standards/profiles or they did but they cost significantly more than the PS3 itself, this put the PS3 in the perfect position for people to buy a Blu-ray player because they were getting the benefits of the current Blu-ray players, plus the gaming/media aspect of a console and it was future proof.

Sony knew exactly how to play the market and I could not understand for a second why companies would release a Blu-ray player in to the market without the ability to upgrade to the latest Blu-ray standards/profiles, so I guess the PS3 was the reason behind such a stupid idea.

By the way, this is just my idea on the whole thing. Let's not forget companies/governments also buying PS3 shipments by the bucket loads because of the CPU power.

Although, I've just had a thought... the other day there was another topic floating around saying about the attachment rate for the PS3 is now up to 8.something, meaning that these few people that are getting their PS3s for games must be buying a crapload of them if no one else is.

bought it for bluray playback and for the additional streaming options that my 360 doesnt offer (mkv). I believe I only bought one game (MGS) and regret that purchase fully.

It has better games than 360 and online is free. 360 doesn't have any appealing exclusives. The ability to play Blu-ray is also a huge plus.
