R.I.P. My ps3...need help guys...

Recommended Posts

hey everyone

i've had my ps3 for almost 3 years now and i've been taking amazing care of it but sadly today i got an YLOD...

i've replaced the original 40 gegas HDD with another 320 one...

question is : if i buy a new ps3 and install the 320 gegas hard disk drive in it will it read it and the data on it or is the HDD linked to my old "no longer among us" ps3?

and do you think i should get a ps3 slim or just buy another big one?

one more question...what happens to all my trophies are they synced to the network or what?

thanks for giving this time all

will require a format if im not mistaken. Whenever you install a hdd

as for your trophies. that's linked to your psn name so no worries. those get synced up.

also, i'd recommend a slim. though i honestly do miss the extra usb slots. i have the camera, bluetooth headset dock, and i'm always having to unplug those to charge controllers. where on my phatty, it wasnt an issue.

Have you tried taking it apart and trying to fix it? There's a good guide that might work here. You also might want to try replacing the thermal paste with arctic silver.

Can you use a USN hub on it?

Just an FYI, I did follow that said guide and it was impressively simple. Just gotta remember not to force it. Everything always falls into place.

When you put an HDD into a PS3, it automatically formats it. Unless you can spring, even temporarily, your other PS3 to life in order to back it up I don't think you can keep your saves. Your trophies, on the other hand, are fine.

Not that I'd know anything about this, but I'd imagine you could take the HDD out of your PS3, hook it up to the computer as a secondary drive and then search for the save game folder unless Sony made it complicated.

I don't think anyone sells the FAT ones anymore. I'm just saying.

I hope that was a joke. I bought one two weeks ago. I had to choose from about 100+ people selling them.

Good luck!

Loss of saves is definitely the most annoying thing about YLOD (well, apart from the repair cost if you can't fix it yourself lol)

Game Traders in Australia actually buy em still and resell them.

I traded in my Fat for a Slim and apparently someone brought the fat within 2 hours of me dropping it off. So they are still being sold. People will buy them as a cheap 2nd hand BluRay player if not for the game machine itself.

How to backup the saves?

I've never actually done it, so had to google myself :)

And to avoid others googling

Backing Up Game Saves to Memory Stick

1. On the XMB (cross media bar), go to the Game section.

2. Go to Game Saves

3. Put in your memory stick (cf, ms duo, sd)

4. Find the game save you want to copy/backup, highlight it and hit the Triangle button.

5. Choose the menu option to Copy

6. Hit the X button on the memory stick and let it copy.

I guess you have to to this for each user on the PS3???

or

A few games have copy protected game save files. To backup these files you can’t just copy them to a memory stick, you will need to do an actual system backup.

To do a full system backup (this will basically copy ALL of the photos, music, videos and game save files and settings on the PS3 to a backup folder; you will need to have an external usb harddrive or thumbdrive w/enough space on it).

In the XMB, go to System

Go to Settings > System Settings > Backup Utility

Then choose Back Up

Finally, pick the device to backup too (memory stick, usb harddrive, etc).
