Sony: If It Didn't Work On Wii, Don't Try It On Move

500x_move4.jpg

Sony's PlayStation Move motion control peripheral has a lot in common with the Nintendo Wii, leading many to fear the PS3 is about to be inundated with crappy Wii ports.

That would be a disaster for Sony, so thankfully the company is working actively with publishers to ensure that the first generation of Move games don't end up like most Wii games: namely, ill-advised waggle plastered atop a "regular" game.

"Our challenge here is to make sure you're doing it with the right games and the right genres", Sony's Rob Dyer told Gamasutra, "and that's where we're spending a lot of our time, going back to people and going", 'Good idea. Bad idea. Good idea. Yeah, not so good idea.'"

"Those are the types of things that we're trying to at least steer people away so they don't spend millions of dollars, come back to me and go, 'Eh... It didn't sell.' 'Well, okay. You never should have made it. It was never going to work anyway. It didn't work on the Wii for a reason. That category didn't. Why did you think it was going to work on this one as well?'"

That's the kind of cold-hearted pragmatism that can, above and beyond the raw specs of the Move, make or break the technology

Wait, I'm confused. I thought they said this was nothing like the Wii? blink.gifrolleyes.gif

They are talking about how an extreme majority of Wii games have motion sensing waggle added on when it doesn't add to the game at all. Wii has an extreme amount of shovelware with half-assed motion sensing shoved into it.

Sony wants to prevent that from happening. If they can prevent that, it will be nothing like the Wii. :p

I've always been a nintendo supporter and always went with nintendo consoles.. but if this is as good as they say it is, then there wouldn't be any reason to buy a Wii (unless u wanted some mario games).. you can pick up the older PS3 just as cheap these days.

LOL. Think you buy Sony Move for your gf for Christmas? That way, she will be satisfied.

Only if it vibrates...

Me and her will be using the Natal and the Baby Maker Extreme game from Indie Games on Xbox Live.

I don't have a problem with the controllers really. What would you have them to look like? There's only so much you can do with a ball at the end...

Well that's kinda it really. I'd get rid of the ball for a start. That is the bit that looks ridiculous.

so basically they've watched what games have failed on the wii and which ones have succeeded, and are going to focus on the successes, kinda makes sense really tbh

I'm pretty sure the ball is part of the control scheme. I'm guessing they're different colors for each player so the camera can tell who is who?

The ball is the entire reason it has better responsiveness. Without the ball, it's the same crappy Wii controller with the same crappy Wii controller responsiveness.

The Wii controller is very responsive (and accurate) if the programmers aren't bozos. :)

if you have ever seen the raw data from a Wiimote coming over Bluetooth and showing on your computer, you'll see that while its responsive you cant do everything with it, it measures acceleration and the programmers will have go guess how and where you are holding the wiimote... the only accurate part of the wiimote is the IR tracker in its front, so you could aim stuff on the screen like a gun

on the PS3 move, everything is as accurate as the wiimote's IR tracking, because everything is visually tracked, the acceleration is there to assist the tracking rather than being the only form of tracking

No, they're admitting that the Move is so much like the Wii they have to take measures to make sure Wii shovel-ware doesn't appear for the PS3.

I think its more like they're telling devs we don't want shovel-ware on our system. There's a reason Sony always has the most complex architecture.

Interesting how Wii still outsells PS3 then.

Well can you buy move for the PS3 yet?

All i'm saying is the Wii's main selling point was the innovative controls. All other consoles are going to abuse their idea, surely it will hurt their sales (that are already plumeting) when the other consoles offer so much more??

I disagree, the reason all wii games have to use innovate controls, it's only an "add-on" for the PS3. 360 will probably have the same issues.
