Guerrilla: KZ3 pushing PS3 to max

Recommended Posts

Guerrilla Games boss Hermen Hulst believes Killzone 3 pushes the PlayStation 3 hardware to capacity.

"We're pushing 100 per cent right now," Hulst told VG247. "You see, there's steam coming out of the machine, almost. All the stuff that we're squeezing, it's got everything to do with the scale and the environments and the action that you're seeing on the screen right now.

"As I was talking about earlier in the presentation, we're having a footprint of a level that's ten times bigger than the average Killzone 2 level. Killzone 2 was not a small game, but that was as far as we could push it back then.

"We're going way overboard this time around," he added, "and I think we're reaching the kind of maximum that we can do. But we always do that. We always find a way to go above and beyond."

Guerrilla Games will benefit from PS3 developer tools used by other first-party Sony studios Sony Santa Monica (God of War III) and Naughty Dog (Uncharted 2).

Killzone 3 will be released sometime next year and was unveiled to the world yesterday. Read Eurogamer's preview to find out more.

I assume this will be a damn good game then.

I really hope they focus more on everything else apart from the gfx tbh.

KZ2 was one of the most disappointing games I've played and it seems it only survived due it's good looks. Once you played the game for longer than 5 mins and the "wow" reaction wore off there was far too many issues uncovered.

True..I want them to focus on adding co-op (which I suspect isn't coming...or if it does, will have a graphical drop when played in that mode). I also want them to fix the flippin' controls. The game was ok, but it was the best we had at the time on the PS3.

OH MAH GAWD!!! WE ARE MAXIN' THE PS3!! NO GAME WILL EVER BE ABLE TO PUSH IT HARDER!!!

Until the next game comes along and does.

I hate when companies talk **** like this...they just end up looking like idiots.

Visuals in the first Killzone were mediocre at best and the gameplay was good, but not stellar. Post-process blurring, static lighting, low poly counts (except for the human faces) and 100000 shades of grey in low res textures is not an impressive looking game.

They've got a lot of ground to cover when being compared to stellar visuals like UC2. The new screens definitely seem to have improved the sense of scale, but nothing in the league of UC2 yet

It seems to be the new trend for high-caliber devs to say they are pushing 100% on the PS3

You mean the second?

Anyway, I really am looking forward what Sony will unleash out of the PS system this time, KZ2 already was very impressive!

High standards to call the graphics 'mediocre at best' most reviews said that they were the best part of the game and certainly at the time nothing looked quite as good as it on the consoles.

Metacritic still has it sitting at 91% so it couldn't have been too bad, the single player certainly had it's shortfalls, but I actually prefered the classes in multiplayer to any of the COD multiplayer games.

I too didn't find the graphics all that. I was playing the other night and I couldn't even tell the difference between the facial textures of this game (or lip syncing) and MW2 to be honest.

But in the end, the graphics are the least of my concern. Just want solid gameplay.

I just hope they don't go the route of the first Killzone, which was too badly optimized and pushed the PS2 too far. I'd rather see good levels and solid gameplay at 30-60 fps, then holy **** huge levels at 15 fps.

100% huh... i rather see them reach this without having to invest resources into 3d. now THAT would be impressive.

Like you say, this may sound impressive but we don't know how much including 3D is adding to this.

Anyway, i wish they'd stop with these kinds of articles. Seems like every few months there's a quote about utilising the full power etc. Just let the work speak for itself and stop the hype.

remember when epic was claiming gears 1 maxed out the 360... (Y)

every dev says this, the next one comes in with better developing techniques that push the system even farther, and the games look even better etc etc

Back when I played the first KZ1, it was incomparable to any other shooter on the PS before, graphics-wise (next to the interesting kind of single player which was also sweet).

Usually, I also say that the story and the game play are the most important in the game, that they have to be solid, but in case of KZ1, I was so astonished by the graphics that I just didn't care about the rather low average fps (and at times, it was really low, but looking at the age of the console, even back then, that was forgiven by me).

Killzone 2 was visually appealing and enjoyable; however, some of the levels would noticeably reduce performance. In some, you'd think you're watching a slide-show. I'd rather they improve the performance more-so than the visuals.
