Ubisoft Toronto creating new Splinter Cell project, confirms Raymond

Ubisoft Toronto is working on a new Splinter Cell project, boss Jade Raymond has revealed.

Speaking with Gama, Raymond, who used to be executive producer on the Assassin?s Creed IP before getting the Ubi Toronto gig last August, also revealed that a second, unnamed triple AAA title was in the works at the studio.

?All of the core team [from Conviction, such as producers Alex Parizeau and Maxime B?land] has relocated with me from Montreal,? said Raymond. ?Where you develop a game does have an impact on who it appeals to? When you think of it like that, I think the Splinter Cell franchise fits Toronto.?

She also insists that it?s all AAA titles for consoles at the studio, so don?t go looking for My Little Pony: Sam Fisher Edition for DS in the near-future.

?Instead of starting a studio and working on small projects, Nintendo DS or portables, we?re starting out of the gate with triple-A only. The reason that I think that?s the right strategy is that it allows us to attract the best talent right off the bat.?

Raymond added she?d like to see 800 people at Ubi Toronto within the next ten years.

Seeing how conviction sold well, and is still selling, it only makes sense they'd make yet another one. And I'll buy that one as well.

I wonder if indeed SCC will remain exclusive but the next installment will be multi-platform to bring back the audience. I think SC took a bit of a fall with the development issues SCC had.

Instead of development issues, I think it's more correct to say that SCC was canceled. So they decided to make SCC instead. :p

But yeah, that, or more correctly the time between releases probably cost them a lot. However, I suspect though I haven't seen the number they still sold more than the last SC, at least opening sales. and probably will over time as well if they haven't. After all the gaming audience has grown significantly since last game. And it was a big game, so it was destined to sell well no matter how short or crappy it could have been, great reviews doesn't exactly stem the sales either.

Well the gameplay was completely scrapped from the original ideas behind SCC, it was far too similar to Assassin's Creed. Some of the environments were definitely reused though, and the story has always been the same afaik.

They need to go back to the games roots, light and dark, stealth. I tried playing SCC stealthily but there were some sections where you just had to mark and execute or spray and pray just to pass the point in the game whereas in previous Splinter Cells if you started spraying you were guaranteed to die. I still think Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory were the best.

I'm the opposite, I think with each installment they made it more & more noob friendly.

The first game was so unforgiving it actually forced you to sit & wait for long sequences to play out like guards patrolling before you moved. Or you had to time exactly when you rushed down a lit corridor without being spotted.

But with the introduction of the knife etc, it was yeah the guard spotted me but I can slit his throat with the tap of a button. Rinse / repeat.

Same goes for MGS series, it turned into a third person shooter.

Yeah i love having to sit, wait and watch enemy patrols to see how many there were, where and how long they patrolled, if there was anywhere where i could take one out without causing any noise, i didnt use guns unless i really had to spent ages going through the level picking off EVERY bad guy. Was pretty dissappointed with Conviction but played it because its probably one of the only games franchises i play religiously, i go back and start from first game and play through every few years.

I think it will come to a point where they just start over and release a game called "Splinter Cell". Conviction was half baked and the sequel will no doubt correct a few things. I wonder if they will release it this year. I think both takes on the series are flawed, they could do a lot better. They peaked with Chaos Theory, lost their way with Double Agent and went the easy action route with Conviction. The use of similar tech and features from all their games doesn't help them much either, everything ends up being the same.

I agree with you here, I hope it does return to its roots in terms of game play.

But with SC:C you have to remember, Sam wasn't working under orders of 'Not to kill'. He was simply a angry man on a mission. Stand in his way and you will die mentality. The mark and execute worked great because of that.

I just hope the next Splinter Cell gets released on the damn PS3 as well. I'm just sick and tired of game studios doing the whole 'exclusive to this console' only bull crap.

With SC games though it really goes back to the series beginning and how well received the game was on the original Xbox.

I'm sure money exchanged hands to help persuade, but Sam has been a sort of mascot for Xbox.

People calling for it to go back to it's roots seem to forget that DA, which stayed with those roots for the most part, sold very bad and got slammed by reviewers. To bring in new people you need to change the gameplay mechanic, and that's what they did. It seems to be working since it's sold close to 2million, if not more by now.

They could start to add more stealth to it in the next one but I enjoyed the added speed conviction brought to the table. There's no reason to move like a snail if you don't have to.

I for one wouldn't want it to go back to it's roots. I loved every Splinter Cell, but this one was by far the best.

I enjoyed Conviction, but then again, I never had a strong attachment to the Splinter Cell series to begin with, so I can't really say that I missed any of the old gameplay mechanics. I can definitely understand why longtime fans might be disappointed with the game, though.

I was a huge Rainbow Six fan back in the days of the first three games (on the PC), and I remember being absolutely appalled when I fired up the demo for Lockdown. One of my friends kept insisting to me that it's a good game, but it didn't matter, just because of how different it was from the franchise I grew up with. I imagine some people feel that way with Splinter Cell.

Please oh please let them go back to the roots! Conviction was just... no. SplinterCell 1-3 were awesome games while in SCC I felt like playing some kind of Gears of War. I loved the highly tactical gameplay of the first three, I just loved to wait and analyze my enemies... Sales seem to say something different however, lets see what happens^^

I don't think the next one will bring back everything but some of the smaller stuff like lock-picking and hacking should come back I'd say. Also the option to knock out and hide bodies would be nice.

It got slammed for the ridiculous and completely unnecessary HQ missions every other mission that had you doing the exact same things you did in the previous HQ missions, the proper story missions were pretty good and i enjoyed DA apart from the HQ missions.

Maybe it was just that, but you bring up the repetition. if anything SC 1-4 never really changed, they all played the same. I know people liked it, I do as well, but if you can't bring in newer gamers and keep sales up using the same gameplay you're forced to make a change.

And DA got slammed for not being like the other 3 installments. DA 360 played very very differently than what SC fans knew and loved.

That is why it got slammed. The Xbox DA version is closer of course to Chaos Theory despite the lower texture resolutions and gimmicky puzzle levels.

I hope they realize that SC is a franchise based around light and sound stealth. This isn't Assassin's Creed or some other 3rd person adventure. Make a solid product and solid product will sell.

I want the next splintercell to be about stealth and interactivity. Allow players to shoot out all lights, every single one. Allow for the set up of certain traps and movable environments so that we can make our own plans and strategies. Something along the lines of SC:CT and pnumbra/hl2.

Going around shooting out every light should be bad. If the AI is done right it should notice the lights are going out and alarms should go off. I never shot out lots of lights anyways, if there's an off switch I'd rather just turn them off.

it was hard getting used to the new control feel.

i remember older SC were alot smother in terms of movement and weapons.

but i still enjoyed SCC alot!!:.

i wouldnt mind action over stealth.

but atleast make it smoother to move Sam which it was in previous games in the series.
