According to Joystiq's sources, Sony is set to reveal a premium tier of the PlayStation Network service, labeled PSN+, during its 2010 E3 media briefing. Unlike Microsoft's Xbox Live Gold service, PSN+ will focus on giving paid subscribers additional bonuses without limiting online multiplayer between paying and nonpaying users.

Many of the features included in the premium service mimic those featured in a supposed survey released late last year. Sources tell us that subscribers will have access to a rotating list of PSP Minis and PSone Classics, exclusive in-game DLC, discounts to the PlayStation Store and "first hour" demo access to full retail titles. Following the first hour of gameplay, players will have the ability to purchase the full title; however, demo access will only be available once the entire title has been downloaded.

As PSN+ subscribers, gamers will also receive protection for their consoles with the recently announced PlayStation Protection Plan, as well as exclusive access to the long-awaited cross-game voice chat. Additional features are said to be in the works following the launch of PSN+, including the previously rumored cloud-based saving system.

Joystiq has been informed that PSN+ subscribers will also have the ability to enable an auto-patching feature, which will detect, download and install updates for recently played PS3 titles on the system.

Pricing and a release for the PSN+ service is unknown, though one source speculates PSN+ may cost $9.99 per month. When contacted, a Sony representative said the company does not "comment on rumors or speculation."

Sounds better than the approach MS has taken (Silver vs Gold)

Isn't it the same? It's just PSN vs PSN+

Sorry, but $50 > $120 in this case. Though I do want some of those PSN+ features, especially the cloud storage and cross game chat.

PSN can still play with people online while Silver can't

Yeah but for how long? They are going to end free online play and this is just baby steps until that point. I?m sure they don?t want PSN fans throwing their PS3's at Sony headquarters.

Sony has stated that online play will ALWAYS be free.

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Let's start a thread on things that Sony has stated! ;) Although I do think that would be a straw on the camel's back type of thing...

If its $120 for the year its deff not gonna be worth it, gold has always had cross game chat and auto patch is already on xbox silver or gold.

The cloud backup is a nice feature tho with the latest xbox update enabling you to save profiles and save to a USB (which is IMO better cause you have it can can take it to other xboxes).

protection plan, meh, most people either get a plan from the company they bought a console from or its covered under house insurance.

Early demo access and PS1/PSP games is quite a nice feature.

But TBH is thats everything it'll offer then deff not worth $120 a year...if it was in-line with gold then maybe.

Edit: missread/understood: xbox doesn't auto patch just does it as soon as a game is launched, not for your recently played games as this does....still both should do that for free.

It seems like the only thing PSN has over Silver is the online gaming, however paying $2.50/month (like the $30/year Live card deal) for the extra benefits like cross game chat, auto patch (which Silver has), and early demo access, seems a much better deal than 4 times as much.

agreed, tho as I put in my Edit, neither the PS3 or Xbox actually have an auto patch, both check when launching a game if its the latest version and then it updates, my understanding of this new PSN+ version is it will look at your recently played games and download patches for those in the background...

But still not worth $10 a month.

The reason that it's $120 a year is to cover the "protection plan".

Pretty expensive for a warranty but judging how often the damn things die, that money might be well spent.

But you could buy a new one (without a further price drop) in about 2 and a half years.

Pretty sure they include netflix with that. Dunno about it being $10/month though.

If they include Netflix then immediately it's a good deal. Netflix is $8.99/month on its own.

First $120 is just a rumor. so lets not judge it that quickly.

i'd love the cloud storage on live in addition to the current save/memory options we have now. Just give me like 1gig of space and i'll be fine.

As much as I really would like the cloud storage, $120? **** that, I'll live with an external HDD backup. I don't play enough demos to warrant hour-play demos, don't worry about the patching, can live w/o cross-game chat easily, and already have a 3-year protection plan through Target. If it was close to Live's price, I'd consider it, and I know part of the cost covers the crap games they'll offer for "free" for PSN+ members, but I'm happy with the free service as it is.

PSN multiplayer will remain free because Sony doesn't operate the servers the way MS does. It's pushed off to the devs.
