glancep
Anytime I try opening a image (gif, jpeg, bmp I think?), Windows Picture and Fax Viewer pops up with a preview of the image. When I right-click it I notice that 'Preview' is the default action, and that to open it in Paint Shop Pro, I have to choose 'Open'... it's really annoying to have to right click an image everytime I want to open it. I know there's gotta be some way to get rid of this preview crap! I looked in the File Type association dialog, but it looked totally normal there... they're associated with PSP and there's no 'Preview' listed there! Anybody have this problem before or know what I can do to fix it?? :ermm: Thanks in advance.... Gideon

treebeard68
What OS are you running? I know in 2000 you can right click a file and hit properties and change what the default program is to open that type of file.

I've been here for a very long time, never signed up for the forum, but visited the site very often. Tut tut to me too? Upsetting someone for a silly reason is..just silly. ;) =) It sounds more like your showing off how you've only been signed up for a short time and posted so much, which is even less cool. If you are or aren't, it sure seems that way. I think a previous thread about it came to the conclusion that unless there's a registry setting for it, you can't change the default for it because windows will always use the picture viewer no matter what you set it to. I'll take a quick look on ms knowledgebase, see if they mention any registry settings.

treebeard68
Do not mean to contradict you Techneaux, but as in my earlier post, in 2000, logged in as admin, you can change default apps. that open files.
Techneaux
I know you did, but windows picture and fax is only in XP (it's just picture viewer in 2000, no?)..and in there, you can't. Windows will ALWAYS use it as the default.

treebeard68
The way I read his post, he is saying that when he normally clicks on a img. file it automatically comes up in preview instead of opening in IE or whatever....maybe I am not understanding correctly, but that is how it came across to me. Techneaux
Exactly what he said, but he said windows picture and fax viewer. I thought that was only in XP, I may be mistaken, I'm not sure. I've got 2000 server edition and it doesn't seem to have it, but I don't know about professional. In XP, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS open picture files instead of opening in anything else you want, including IE. It's very annoying, but I've gotten to like it. Like Xavier said however, using TweakXP, you should be able to get it to turn off. I'm sure it's just a registry setting somewhere, but through the normal default program setting changing- nothing gets changed. Picture Viewer is God-Like in that situation. :)
glancep
Thanks everybody for the help... after looking around on TweakXP, I came across the answer... Here's the page: http://www.tweakxp.com/tweakxp/display.asp?id=121 or, the short of it: just open regedit and delete the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTSystemFileAssociationsimageShellExContextMenuHandlersShellImagePreview Thanks again you guys! ... that was some quick responses Gideon
treebeard68
You were right Techneaux, I was not aware that Windows Picture and Fax Viewer was inherent to XP. In 2000 it is called Windows imaging preview. I have not messed with XP in a couple of months. Played with the RC realeases but I am really happy with 2000.
