Alpha Protocol is being slammed in reviews

Recommended Posts

I was kind of looking forward to this game, but I don't think I'll bother now.

Destructoid gave it a 2.0

It's disgusting that a game in this forsaken a state is asking for a single thin dime, let alone sixty bucks. Even if it was free I wouldn't recommend it. Alpha Protocol, to its slim credit, has its basis in noble and ambitious ideas, and those ideas are even well executed on the whole. However, while the ambitious stuff hits the mark, the bog standard gameplay has suffered beyond measure. You can build the most magnificent castle in the world, but if the foundations are made out of wet feces, everything's going to crumble and fall apart before your very eyes. Alpha Protocol is a castle that's collapsed in crap. Proof that even the most accomplished of visions are worthless if the fundamentals aren't in place.

Joystiq said it was a technical nightmare

As a reviewer, I can understand how a company can release a game with structural issues. Sometimes that stuff is just too deeply ingrained to fix, or maybe you really believe it's the right design choice. I'm going to call you out on that stuff, but there's a chance I'll be able to get past it. But to release a game that's just plain not finished and to expect people -- to expect your fans -- to pay the full $60 for it? That's where you lose me.

I never played KOTOR 2 but I know people that hated that game. Hopefully they don't mess up Fallout New Vegas

I watched previews and dev videos over at Gametrailers a while back.

Seriously, that alone made me want to put a bullet in my head. I just couldn't get into it at all.

Destructoid gave Deadly Premonitions a 10. They troll for page hits. Other reviews are coming in between 60-90%

The game is alright. It's clunky as all hell but it's a gem underneath. Eurogamer summed it up nicely:

If you're willing to put in the effort, it can steadily win you over. Obsidian can't really compete with the bigger boys in the RPG field, then, but it's carved out a little space to call its own. With ambition instead of budget, and integrity instead of polish, in the end the choice of whether to persevere or not is pretty easy to make.

It feels like a call back to 90's early 00's RPGs like Deus Ex. If that rings your bell it's worth a rent and a cheap investment but it will go over your typical console gamers head.

All the reviews are PATHETIC. This is the most prejudice I have ever seen towards a game. Someone must have actually paid these game critics to write awful reviews about this game. Imagine Bourne Identity mashed with Splinter Cell and Mass Effect. Sure, the gameplay isn't that original but the writing, story and awesome music and scenery makes this game worth playing. This is the most fun I've had playing a game since Mass Effect 2 earlier this year. Splinter Cell: Convinction is a borefest compared to this game.

Destructoid is a video game rag piece. Those guys only know how to rant like an unintelligible teenager being emo than write a well written editorial.

You guys be the judge. Check these screens out (I took them using fraps). If you like Splinter Cell, Mass Effect's RPG system and espionage ala Casino Royale and The Bourne Indentity, then you're in for a treat. This game should be put in with The Saboteur as one of the most underappreciated games in the past two years.

The graphics aren't poor. It might be inconsistent at times but it's definitely a 6-8/10 graphics wise. Some scenes are stunning. Check out the other thread for pics.

I'd say the textures and the shaders are poor - like something you'd expect out of an unfinished game.

Look at the building at the distance on the last screenshot - that's just a blur.

I've just started playing it and so far I'm loving it. Graphics could be better but good graphics don't necessarily make for good games. It's the story, locations and atmosphere that count. And I also loved The Saboteur (Y)

Did you help make the game or something ? because you sound kind of like someone ****ed on your baby :p

also I'm not sure the character being at home in a Jacuzzi makes the game better

As for the game, gonna give it a try and see what I make of it.

I think I felt personally insulted when I read the reviews for this game. I think I will counter it all with my raves for the game despite its flaws.

You'll definitely love the game if you loved the Saboteur, another under appreciated gem that will most likely not get a sequel due to the poor sales.

Was going to buy this game until I saw the Gamespot / IGN reviews. -.-'

saboteur was garbage at best, dumb as hell AI, easy as to play. I played on the hardest setting and went on a murderous rampage for almost an hour with just a pistol with next to no bullets. half the time i would run out of bullets, run up to a guy with a rifle, beat him up and take his rifle and repeat. He would be completely on the other side of the screen and he wouldn't kill me. easy games aren't fun... the game had potential but lacked soo much polish. it deserved its average reviews.

also the graphics in this game look like the need AA in a BAD WAY.

yeah reviews can't be trusted anymore, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it's all paid and bought now. as for this game, will be getting it since my other one for June, Darkstar One, apparently got delayed. so it's Alpha time, baby. looks like an interesting proposition, this one.

with that user name, ain't no surprise - what the...?

seriously tho, just got it today and will give it a good play in the coming days. heard good things about it from family, so it can't be all that bad. i'm guessing a 7/10 like Eurogamer said, not that i necessarily believe them, they're as likely to be crooked as the next media outlet.

A reasonable score. The game isn't fundamentally broken. But it is flawed.

"QUOTE FROM JOYSTIQ"

Half right. It's a quote for sure. But it's from the comments! Not exactly the most reputable of sources. Wouldn't surprise me if mismanagement was the cause of few of the issues though.

i thought Saboteur was fun as hell, for the $12 i paid. it was an extremely average game, but that is what i was looking for at the time. i wanted some mindless fun.

Alpha Protocol looks abysmal... definitely avoiding it. The graphics are terrible too - not that The Saboteur was all that great.
