Creating a link (website question)

Question

I remember a while back someone gave me a website. It was from www.tinyurl.com and they said go here to this website and download it, and it worked :)

Problem

So I have this document and I would like to say to people go to www.tinyurl.com/2882 and you can download it.

I went to the website www.tinyurl.com, but I can't seem to figure it out. Perhaps someone can advise me where I went wrong.

Thanks

Tiny URL is a site that just shortens the actual length of the URL, same place, just redirects to the longer (original) link. To have people download things, you must have the file uploaded to either your own site, preferably, or another site such as imgur.com for images, other hosting sites for other media. TinyURL has nothing to do with the hosting (upload / download in your case) of files.

Did you go to TinyURL at all to see where you "Enter in your URL" to make it shorter? You need a previous URL in order for this to work.

If you have a file you want them to download, it has to be hosted. If it's just on your computer, this method will not work.

Best bet: Sign up for Dropbox and add the file there; Then share the public URL with your friend.

It's all straight forward, it's basically just a link to a link.

The link is real short though, it sorta reminds me of the old .TK domains from years ago. :p

I wish I knew what the heck you were talking about

TinyURL is a website that allows you to input a really long link and make it shorter and more readable.

For example, here is a link to a youtube playlist:

TinyURL allows me to shorten that link to just this: http://tinyurl.com/2w2y3b5

It's the same link (as in, either link will take you to the same place), but TinyURL has allowed me to reduce the number of characters to a reasonable amount.

Tinyurl makes urls (links) shorter.

Lets pretend this is the link your friend sent you for the file-

Notice that the above link is really long! Your friend wants it to be smaller for you.

So he goes to TinyUrl and puts in "http://yourfriendswebsite.com/files/thatimportantfile.zip"

Then TinyUrl gives him

http://tinyurl.com/1234

Now when you click on "http://tinyurl.com/1234" it ACTUALLY sends you to "http://yourfriendswebsite.com/files/thatimportantfile.zip"

TinyUrl just redirects people to the original, longer, link.

Now if you want to share a file you can go to http://mediafire.com or http://filedropper.com and upload your file for free. Then the website will give you a download link. If you want you can take that download link and put it into TinyUrl and get your own TinyUrl.

Do this...

go to rapidshare.com

Click on the "Choose..." button which is besides the blank box.

Select your document which you wish to share.

Click on "Upload"

It will start uploading, wait till it uploads completely.

Then you will get a download link

Something like http://rapidshare.com/files/394296123/filename.zip

now go to tinyurl.com

Paste the above rapidshare link in the box and click "Make TinyUrl!"

then you will get an url which you can share with your friends.
