DrunknMunky Veteran Posted June 1, 2010 Veteran Share Posted June 1, 2010 Sony Working on PlayTV 2 Back in 2008, PlayTV was released in PAL territories. It's now 2010, what's going on with it? Mark Green, senior producer at Sony Cambridge Studio, has confirmed to website Spong that Sony is working on a second model of PlayTV. Sony is, says Green, "still working on PlayTV, PlayTV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts..." PlayTV is a television set-top box and recorder for the PlayStation 3. It has yet to be released in North America. Check out this handy video explanation of the PlayTV. http://kotaku.com/5552186/sony-working-on-playtv-
SaltLife
They better make some serious changes to this if it want's to work in the US. If it's anything like those OTA streams from other online companies there isn't much to choose from here in the US. But the concept is cool. Maybe they have a trick up their sleeve that we don't know about in this PlayTV2. Either way, I'll be on the lookout for this as I don't pay for cable services. Coldgunner
I'm hoping this is for DVB-T2
DrCheese
I'm hoping this is for DVB-T2 Same, would be a major use of my PS3 for years to come if true.
Chanser
Sony should take their time, Freeview HD isn't widely available yet.
AbandonedTrolley
Sony should take their time, Freeview HD isn't widely available yet. Being honest, a hardware upgrade and then some tweeks to the current PlayTV interface and I would be happy. Faster load time, ability to launch from BR Remote would be nice and series link. That's about all I think it really needs off the top of my head. Oh and a dual tuner wouldn't be bad either!
Richard Hammond
Sony should take their time, Freeview HD isn't widely available yet. But DVB-T2 is backwards compatible with the current standard and the settop boxes upscale regular Freeview TV so you will get better picture quality once its run through all the filters, the Granada area which is Lancashire and Crystal Palace transmitter in London currently serve Freeview HD including many more transmitters, it may not be as widespread as regular Freeview but there are 5 or 6 DVB-T2 settop boxes and PVRs out already and if there are enough customers to warrant boxes this early i dont think Sony should be waiting till 2012 when the switchover is complete, dont screw people over who already have Freeview HD just because you dont have it. Hedon
Let's talk PlayTV once it hits the U.S. K, thx.
Fish
i don't get it, what does it do? Basically it's a freeview tuner with PVR, with the ability to play to PSP. Nice idea, and I suppose it could eliminate one of those black boxes underneath your TV if you have one. Although... it is another box in itself... hmmm. He shoots, he misses. What else is up their sleeve?

What else is up their sleeve? It is another box but I find the picture quality is great, and the box is pretty small. I'm guessing most of the power is coming from the PS3 itself, but it feels like there's nothing in the PlayTV box, it's so light!
Fish
If Sony could do a licencing deal with Sky this could be a real winner.
